Do you believe in fairy tales? I dont simply because Ive already outgrown my childhood fascination for magic wands, fairy godmothers and frogs and beasts that turned into handsome princes. And lets not even talk about damsels in distress who had to wait for their superficial saviors to hand them their own pre-conceived notion of happiness. But I do believe in the power of luck and hardwork and that if you have what it takes to weather the storms and climb the heavens to chase your stars, more than likely, you'll be able to catch more than what you have wished for. Five years ago, Arnel Pineda stumbled upon his stars, handed in a silver platter by no less than his modern fairy godmother in the person of the legendary founder and guitarist of the iconic rock band Journey. Neil Schon discovered Arnel on You Tube while trolling the web in search of the new voice of Journey, a band that had already gone through many vocalists including Steve Perry, the bands third and most charismatic frontman.

They NEVER play any of the old stuff on the radio (like they used to in the South Bay back in the mid-70s - Journey was a local band). It's too bad, because people would like it.
Here's an example: People
RE: Dang, is the video on Youtube?
Im not going to Examiner to get it.

Also this:
“Journey’s classic 198185 lineup reunited in 1996 to record Trial by Fire. The album was a huge success, entering the Billboard charts at No. 3 and going platinum before year’s end, but its triumph was short-lived. Before the Trial By Fire tour could begin, Perry suffered a hip injury while hiking in Hawaii and was unable to perform. Perry was diagnosed with a degenerative bone condition and a hip replacement was required, and as he was reluctant to rush into the surgery, Perry desired to postpone the tour. Due to the long wait between the album’s release and the tour’s postponed kick-off date, as well as the absence of Journey’s iconic frontman, Journey fans were losing hope for the band’s future.
Meanwhile, long-time Journey drummer Steve Smith resigned. (Smith had rejoined, along with original Journey bassist Ross Valory).
The remaining members waited until 1998, nearly 17 months after Perry’s injury, before making a decision on Journey’s future. Growing impatient and realizing the window of opportunity was closing to follow up the success of the platinum-selling Trial By Fire LP with a world tour, Journey members Jonathan Cain and Neal Schon met with Perry and presented an ultimatum that he either undergo hip replacement surgery so the tour could proceed upon his recovery, or a replacement singer would be hired.[6] Perry, still hesitant to undergo surgery and now apparently upset at his bandmates’ intractability and their perceived meddling in personal health decisions, decided to leave Journey.”
ARe you going to watch the doc?
I saw one of the shows on that tour, The Wearhouse in New Orleans.
What's the best story of the tour if you can share?
Agreed....what a voice.
Arnel is amazing, but he is still “channelling” Steve Perrry. I think he will come into his own. Steve Perry is one in a zillion.
Worlds apart?
:)
Saw them live, several times. Gabriel was an unbelievable performer from the start. Still clinging to my several vinyl Genesis albums. Loved Selling England by the Pound.
Wikipedia says he was pissed off with his bandmates' inflexibility about scheduling his much-needed hip replacement surgery after a hiking injury, apparently wanting him to go on tour in terrible pain instead.
Hmmm. Let’s see if I can tell that one on a family forum without getting thumped by the mods. (Fingers crossed.)
The members of Van Halen thought Steve Perry was rather eccentric and high-and-mighty. They were always giving him grief.
One night after warming up, Steve Perry was wearing a scarf back stage. David Lee Roth asked him why he was wearing a scarf. Perry replied haughtily and loudly in front of the crew (according to Roth) that the scarf was to keep his vocal cords warm so he could perform well later.
The next night when Perry was warming up, all of the members of Van Halen (with Roth in his infamous buttless pants) walked on stage wearing socks on their, um, junk. Steve Perry stormed off stage in a hissy fit which made Van Halen and the entire crew double over with laughter.
Saw the original Journey (first 3 albums) numerous times. Saw them with Robert Fleischman as the lead singer. That was in Stockton, Ca. at the War Memotial Theater. Kansas was the opening act.
Their fourth album was going to be titled Wheel In The Sky. My buddy bought a T shirt that touted the WITS tour. Several months later, Fleischman was out and Perry was in.
Their popularity soared with Perry, he was good, but they soon stopped playing anything from their original 3 albums. They had become a “chick band “ as far as we were concerned. That is a group you’d take your girlfriend to go see but they were no longer a rock band.
When we saw them with Kansas (whom we had never heard of or seen before), early that afternoon we saw some “hippies “ tossing a football
in a park near the concert venue. We debated about going to challenge them to a friendly game. We opted not too. Later that evening to our surprise as Kansas took the stage we realized they were the “hippies “ we had seen in the park. Kansas fwiw rocked.
That was after the initial loss of Perry. The band initially broke up in the late 80s, after Raised on Radio. They re-grouped in the mid-90s for Trial By Fire, but never toured for it due to Perry's injury.
I saw them in concert on tv a couple of years ago. The guy sounds just like Steve Perry, but it was strange because he’s a young Philipino jumping around the stage with a bunch of old guys.
Like Chicago before Peter Cetera took charge and turned their massive horn sounds into ballad crap.
Like The Commodores before they let Lionel Richey turn them from a funk band into whiney ballad producing crap.
Like The Doobie Brothers before Michael McDonald took their tight instrument backed sound into ballad hell.
Etc.
Saluting your tagline. Sad but true.
At the 1978 (first) Texxas Jam (I was there) Journey and Van Halen were way down the ticket. Most didn’t know who either were.
Actually saw them at Cisco LIVE! in June of last year (Universal Studios) and the show was fantastic! If you didn’t know better, you’d think Steve Perry was up there singing!
Not live. Only on Paladia when they played Manila. "Separate Ways" is my fave. They were magnificent.
