I saw one of the shows on that tour, The Wearhouse in New Orleans.
What's the best story of the tour if you can share?
Hmmm. Let’s see if I can tell that one on a family forum without getting thumped by the mods. (Fingers crossed.)
The members of Van Halen thought Steve Perry was rather eccentric and high-and-mighty. They were always giving him grief.
One night after warming up, Steve Perry was wearing a scarf back stage. David Lee Roth asked him why he was wearing a scarf. Perry replied haughtily and loudly in front of the crew (according to Roth) that the scarf was to keep his vocal cords warm so he could perform well later.
The next night when Perry was warming up, all of the members of Van Halen (with Roth in his infamous buttless pants) walked on stage wearing socks on their, um, junk. Steve Perry stormed off stage in a hissy fit which made Van Halen and the entire crew double over with laughter.
At the 1978 (first) Texxas Jam (I was there) Journey and Van Halen were way down the ticket. Most didn’t know who either were.
