Meanwhile, the rise of the Internet has been coincidental with a rapid erosion of accountability in government and rise in authoritarianism—not just in the USA (where it has been very marked) but all over the world.

However did we survive before AlGore rubbed two wires together and invented the Internet?
Interesting how he touts Internet freedom abroad while they're trying to restrict freedoms here.

It's a fundamental human right to hang tyrants from lampposts.

How can a human accomplish such idiocy? Is it a requirement to get to federal office or does the air in DC make you so stupid. This dipwad says authoritarian governments don’t want people to have internet but his boss, King Hussein I just handed it over to the largest collection of villains and thugs ever assembled. The UN.

I love the internet, but I am not sure it should be consider a natural “right” along with others.

I guess you could lump it into freedom of expression and assembly.

But really..a fundamental right?

Kerry is a Klown.

a fundamental right to the Internet

Perhaps we should add that to the Bill of Rights. We could pattern the language after the 2nd amendment.

Proposed 28th amendment.

A well regulated Militia Internet, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms Modems, shall not be infringed.

Unless you’re a conservative website that really ticks off the powers what are.
Then you’re guilty of thought crimes and “hate”, and so you must go.

The least the article could have done was give us an exact quotation. To say that one has a fundamental right to something that didn’t exist 50 years ago and relies entirely on advanced technology is crazy talk even for John Kerry.

How about the producer of the video falsely accused f causing the Benghazi attack? He was jailed for accessing the internet? How about government plans for shutting down cell phone and internet access during any disturbance?

Speaking from Washington to an online freedom forum in Estonia, Kerry said Monday that open and unrestricted communication helps make governments accountable. He said autocratic rulers therefore see a free, open and inclusive Internet as a threat to their power. Kerry said restrictions imposed by authoritarian leaders allow them to fragment their societies and cloud the truth.

From August 5, 2004: DNC Lawyers Work To Muzzle Swift Boat Vets' Ad

HUMAN EVENTS has obtained a copy of a letter which lawyers for the Democratic National Committee and John Kerry have sent to television station managers attempting to suppress the blistering anti-Kerry TV spot created by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and first reported here on HumanEventsOnline.com.

The letter claims the ad is "false" and "libelous" and suggests, in not-so-subtle terms, that TV stations should use their "legal authority" to refuse any requests for advertising airtime, stating that "because your station has this freedom [to refuse the ad], and because it is not a 'use' of your facilities by a clearly identified candidate, your station is responsible for the false and libelous charges made by this sponsor" (emphasis added).

The Internet is simply a collection of routers, switches, and communications paths made up of wires, fiber optic cable and transmitted radio waves. There’s a whole lot of infrastructure that makes it work and all of this infrastructure costs the participants money and labor (which is also money when you come right down to it).

All of it relies on electricity which is also NOT free.

If it is a RIGHT for me to get Internet, then as a right, if I cannot afford to pay for it, SOMEONE needs to provide it to me, even for free. That is where this thinking leads.

So, someone works hard to supply the labor and cash to provide something and “we” (who?—the government, the collective, the people, some dude?) can collectively take it from them.

Communism.
