Didn’t Johnson get fined for that? You're thinking of a different player, maybe it was Dave Winfield, I forget. He was in the outfield and threw a ball at a seagull that was wandering around on the field. Killed the bird, I think. Anyway, big trouble. Seagulls ARE a pest.
