---SNIP-- After almost two decades of judge-shopping, Carter's defense team finally had the good fortune to come up before federal Judge Lee Sarokin, the most criminal-friendly judge in the nation. Sarokin ordered a new trial on the grounds that the prosecution should not have been permitted to argue that racial revenge was the motive.
"For the state to contend that an accused has the motive to commit murder solely because of his membership in a racial group is an argument which should never be permitted to sway a jury or provide the basis of a conviction." Sarokin wrote. By that standard, of course, the prosecution in the Texas dragging death of James Byrd Jr. would have had to find some other motive than the racism that so clearly led to the actions of the three killers.
Even Sarokin did not state Carter was innocent or that he was framed, as the movie people keep saying.

I was reading about this guy today and all the celebrations. Then I got to the part where he committing muggings - that’s ‘muggings’ with an ‘s’ - and bragged about killing cops. So I was saying to myself, why was he even let out of jail? WTF?
So, thanks for a timely reminder.
I also remind them of Bob's love affair with Black Panther George Jackson , of Soledad Brother fame. Thank God Jackson, at least, did not escape justice for his crimes, which also produced one of the most hilarious song parodies in history. Check out "Pull the Tregroes Negroes" [name changed to protect modern sensibilities]on National Lampoon's Radio Dinner sometime. Her Nibs, Joan Baez is the butt of the best parody of liberal hypocrisy you'll hear this side of Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers.

I remember reading some of this years ago. At least he’s gone to his reward.
You're dead wrong. The defense-friendly judge threw out his conviction and ordered a new trial. The state decided not to try him again due to the length of time since the murders and the scarcity of living witnesses.
I’m glad someone noticed. Bob Dylan was the cheerleader of 60’s leftism.
