There’s something enormously compelling about these pictures of famous people getting honors from the Queen. It’s not unlike seeing friends from two different parts of your life chatting in a bar. The immediate reaction is almost “I didn’t know you two KNEW each other!?”
Of course, everyone knows Angela Lansbury, who yesterday made the trip to Windsor Castle for her investiture as a Dame Commander. Best known for playing Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote, she’s had a lifetime’s experience on stage and in front of the camera, in such notable productions as The Manchurian Candidate, Nanny McPhee and Bedknobs and Broomsticks, having recently returned to the London stage to revive Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit (having already won a Tony for the 2009 Broadway production) at the Gielgud Theatre.
Angela, who has lived in the U.S.—on and off—since she was 15 years old, told BBC News: “To meet the Queen under these circumstances is a rare and lovely occasion.”
Her nomination recognized not only her career but her charity work, and as she explains, feels like a different order of award even from the lifetime achievement BAFTA she received in 2009, or last year’s Academy Honorary Award:
“[The Oscar] is for my work in motion pictures and this is for the overall accomplishments of my life as an actress. It has afforded me the joy of working in America and also in England a great deal.”
If only Sheriff Amos Tupper had been alive to see this day. Ay-yah.
The excerpt doesn’t mention her role in “Samson and Delilah,” overshadowed as she was by the incendiary Hedy Lamarr.
Is she playing Madame Arcati in “Blithe Spirit”? I’ll bet she’s completely hysterical.

Pretty brave of the Queen as every time Angela Lansbury shows up, somebody gets murdered.
Never fear, JD Fletcher will solve the case!

J.B. Fletcher didn’t get rich off of her books but it was from money she was paid to stay away from places so they wouldn’t have a murder. She raked it in hand over foot.
By far, the most bizarre movie she was ever in was The Company of Wolves (1984). Visually gorgeous, its symbolism and surrealism goes way beyond a single viewing, and you are pretty much on your own as comes to figuring it out. A psychology degree would help, maybe.
Well worth it, if you can find a copy. The girl featured in the movie could have had a great career, but only starred in a good version of Snow White, then just a couple of small roles, before disappearing from the radar.
Maybe the Queen figured that inviting Angela Lansbury would help cover up some of the people the Queen had herself killed with her knobkierrie, in a fit of rage.
Angelia Lansberry is another actress. I love her in ‘Murder, She Wrote’. Of course,I think Cabot Cove had the highest rate of murders... even more than Chicago.
