Carter was guilty as hell, convicted twice by juries who heard the evidence. He was released by a judge based on a song by Bob Dylan.

That's nothing, twice convicted murdered "Leadbelly" got released on testimony by folklorist Lomax that he was a vital singer and "songwriter" (Lomax attributed ownership to him for some public domain songs so he'd get some royalties to live on).

That was a time when many black men like Carter were supposedly railroaded into jail. At least many white libs like Dylan swallowed those stories.

That was the time of "radical chic" (about the time of "porno chic") when wealthy liberals would throw house parties and fundraise for known seditious and terrorist groups.

Yeah, the Tom Wolfe book. I never did read that book, but it was talked a lot about in the day. Even some lefty sources made fun of Leonard Bernstein. I can see why Wolfe became persona non grata with many lefties though. He made fun of their rituals and skewered them for allying with anti-American radicals. Now, many left coast and east coast mainstream lib celebrities are anti-American radicals.

You can paraphrase about Carter, the very same words Mary McCarthy said about the Leftist idol,playwrite-writer,Lillian Hellman:

“Every word out of his mouth was a lie, including every ‘and’ and ‘the’.”

And I mean EVERY SINGLE WORD. But the Left simply will, never believe that one of their icons would lie about every single thing, every single day of that icon’s life. Then again, if they are convinced, Leftisdts will excuse it with:”Well, he HAAAAAD to, he was BLAAAAACK.Blacks have been treated so horribly by....” followed by the usual river of anti-White, Lefty-verbal-diarrhea.
