I would guess because abused kids are ashamed of what happened and want to forget about it, but eventually find that they can't.

Why do accusations like these often come out many years after the fact?I can't imagine being raped as a teenager, then having to tell my parents, especially if I was a male. Teenagers go through enough emotional ups and downs, can't imagine having to deal with that too.
