Most children, Asher Svidensky says, are a little intimidated by golden eagles. Kazakh boys in western Mongolia start learning how to use the huge birds to hunt for foxes and hares at the age of 13, when the eagles sit heavily on their undeveloped arms. Svidensky, a photographer and travel writer, shot five boys learning the skill - and he also photographed Ashol-Pan

Those photos are incredibly beautiful. I’ve always been fascinated with Mongolia and would love to visit there one day. Mongolia in the 21st century in some ways may resemble the 13th. I read a book awhile back called the Mongol Queens; Genghis Khan was far more tolerant in many ways than one might suspect, turning over power to his daughters as well. Those queens did quite a lot in their day.

Complaints from the Left:
1. We need eagle control!
2. Those poor foxes; the Mongols need to be vegan.
3. Exploitation of underpaid labor is unfair. Free the Eagles!
4. That Mongol girl is probably only earning 80% of what she kills as opposed to Mongol boys.

thanks... again. Like I said when I first saw that clip, I was just blown away by it... and I thought I done near saw everything there was to see on the internets. Amazing.
and by the way, that audio, everytime I hear it makes me think Mark Knopfler knows how to sing in Mongolian... something about the cadence of that song sounds very much like Dire Straits or solo Knopfler... Like, maybe the live at the BBC version of "Water of Love"... maybe it's the wood blocks keying me up to this. Maybe I got it all wrong.

They hunt in winter, when the temperatures can drop to -40C (-40F). Someone should sack the editor.

I think that first photograph may be one of the most amazing technical works of its kind I have ever seen. The control of lighting, depth of field, contrast, backdrop, and position despite the low light levels and the speed of action are all perfect. With the sinusoid in the thongs no less ending at inches from her release hand. It had to be one hell of a telephoto lens taken from at least a hundred feet.
It communicates everything, from the intent of the bird to the joy in her heart. Even her seemingly unbalanced position adds to the flow and glow.
Incredible. Genius.
