The band was introduced by Stipe, who delivered an eloquent speech that addressed the power and historical importance of the band as part of a counterculture that somehow became mainstream. "Nirvana tapped into a voice that was yearning to be heard," he said. "In the '80s and early '90s, the idea of a hopeful, democratic country had practically been dismantled by Iran Contra, by AIDS, by the Reagan, Bush Sr. administrations. With their music and their attitudes, Nirvana blasted through all that with crystalline, nuclear rage and fury. Nirvana were kicking against the system to show a sweet and beautiful, but fed-up fury coupled with howling vulnerability. They spoke truth, and a lot of people listened. They were singular and loud and melodic and deeply original. And that voice
That voice. Kurt, we miss you."

Typical bumper sticker mentality from the far left.
Most overrated band, ever.
What a pant load. Bunch of spoiled kids just like SF in the 60’s
REM or Nirvana? There are songs by Nirvana I can enjoy but REM is as toxic as it gets. I’d rather listen to Springsteen and you know how I feel about Springsteen!
I knew someone who called Athens, Georgia the Austin, Texas of the southeast.
Nirvana.
You know why lefties love them....because Heavy Metal tended to reject the hippy, leftist notions of “peace and love”. So it had to be done away with.....Enter Grunge and the Leftists controlled rock music again.
That’s funny since Nirvana wasn’t a political band. And many who followed Nirvana while on SubPop during the early grunge era knows full well that Nirvana completely changed their sound to market to a broader market. I have played Bleach (Nirvana’s first album) to many who claim they are Nirvana fans and had no idea who they were listening too. Punk was alive and well way before Nirvana. Stipe is a fool and has no idea what he is talking about.
Bizarre article. How could Nirvana steal the show? The dude is dead.
And, the speech by Stipe is bogus. Cobain was not political in that manner at all.
The two survivors, with their riches and success are now cogs in the liberal National Socialist machine.
I can feel the stupid attaching itself to my brain cells.
Stipe had a crush on him, no doubt.
I don’t think so.
Stipe is insane and projecting his deepest perverted fantasies as historical fact.
Quick! Name one Nirvana song other than Smells Like Teen Armpits.
Sorry. Time's up.
Sorry, Courtney Love had him killed.
Cobain’s family has said that they would believe an OD before they would believe a gun suicide. apparently he had a great respect for guns.
Quote one lyric from Nirvana....you can’t because nobody could understand the lyrics.....Weird Al nailed that one.
“Negative Creep” was covered by one of the Ramones, IIRC.
Yeah. You get it.
It revisionist history that Novoselic and Grohl probably go along with now.
But it has no basis in reality.
Just like to give a shout out to kurt cobain for eliminating his contribution to the CO2 output of total angst filled didiots. Waaaa. Poor me. I’m a celebrity and have more money than I ever thought possible. I suck. Guess I’ll use one of jojo’s shotguns and blow my brains(?) out. Buh bye.
Yes, that was the voice of the Beavis and Butthead generation.
