Why not also blame the director Blake Edwards?

The only thing good about that movie was the theme song.

Was Tsui Hark racist when he used similar imagery in his Hong Kong action films (either it was the Fong Sai Yuk series or Once Upon A Time In China, both storylines are similar and I don't recall).

Didn’t Tao Jones used to write under the name of Shorty Johnson?

I’m curious. Why didn’t Jones bring this up while Rooney was alive?

Pure bull. Liberals are a vicious lot. Let Rooney rest in peace.

Just for fun I looked up the contemporaneous NY Times (!) review to see what they’d say about Rooney’s offensive portrayal.

One sentence mentions him. Says something about him being “exotic.” IOW, not really either positive or negative.

Times have sure changed, and apparently so has The Times. All that aside, I thought his performance is a serious detraction from the movie, which I wasn’t all that crazy about anyway.

Will Hollywood ever stop portraying whites negatively ?

Al Bundy, Archie Bunker, the list goes on and on, from the beginning of movies right through to today.

Lazy, stupid, racist, childish, greedy, adulterous, drunkard, “whitebread”, prejudiced, “evil rich”, privileged, thief, hypocrite, etc., etc., etc. If you’re smart, you’re a criminal. If you’re a cop, you use excessive force. Even if a white male character is portrayed as a “good guy”, he’s got to have tons of evil, rotten, wicked traits as “baggage”. He’s a good guy, just a little deviant, or a perpetual loser, a drunk, etc.

For every “good guy”, Hollywood portrays several “bad guys”. And the “bad guys” are glorified.

Same could be said of the way white women are portrayed; mostly negatively.

In Hollywood’s eyes, everyone else is a saint, white people are the “root of all evil”.

Well, unless they jump on the “progressive” bandwagon and support socialism/communism/new world order/globalist foundations/etc., otherwise known as the Dem party. Then, in Hollywood’s eyes, they are free to commit every crime and immorality imaginable - and then some. And they’re still ok, because they’re the minions of the “elites”.

I decry these racialists. My American family of italian descent laughs at the broken English stereotypes even if it is done by a feller of German Jewish background like Chico Marx.

People need to get over themselves. Strive toward proper American English in future generations and don’t be afraid to laugh at the zips who just got off the boat.

What a load. I have never even heard of this "toxic character" in this long ago film. It contributed to ethnic stereotypes in what? 1% of today's American population?

Once again we have anti-racism meaning anti-white people. The real meaning and intent of so called anti-racism,

Maybe white males need to start complaining about Mary Martin and Sandy Duncan playing Peter Pan.

Clearly Jeff Yang is really only upset because Mickey Rooney once acted in a movie based on a novela written by a homosexual.

Jeff isn’t angry about long ago stereotypes.

Jeff is homophobic.

“The Bridges At Toko-Ri” and “The Atomic Kid”, are both indicative of his range as an actor. He was in another good film where I think he was a naval corpsman, but I can’t recall it just now.

RIP, Mickey.

Here's a tip to the malignant, despicable, race-baiters trying to denigrate the memory of the late Mr. Rooney:

Simply because a caucasian actor portrays an asian in a film (even if it's a caricature of an asian), does not make the actor rascist.  I.E.:

Tony Randall played the asian Dr. Lao in "7 Faces of Dr. Lao".

Luise Rainer (French) and Paul Muni portrayed asians in "The Good Earth".

And in 1922, Lon Chaney portrayed an asian in "Shadows".

Mickey Rooney at Archive.org. (Including episodes of his 1954-1955 TV show.)
