Deborah Hughes lives across the street. The retired nurse may have saved the life of that driver, Steve Utash. She broke up the angry mob that was beating him. Detroit Police Chief James Craig knocked on the woman's door and personally called her a "Detroit hero."
She tells her story in this edition of The Americans with Charlie LeDuff. Watch the full story in the video player above.
Authorities are broadening the spectrum of the investigation, considering charging the suspects with a hate crime.

“They stole his wallet.”
That’s what you do when you’re outraged.
Good for Deborah Hughes, Chief Craig, and for Charlie LeDuff.
They need to get her out STAT!
I only wish Utash had been carrying and taken these animals out.
The 'neighborhood' in question already *knew* her identity. She lived there. It's quite unlikely that the neighborhood 'tough guys' will jack with her though. She's armed, and they know it...

She should move from that hell hole because she will not be safe if 8 or 10 predators know she has a gun they can steal.
Being armed is not enough if a mob ambushes you.
She’s not safe there.
I used to live in that same neighborhood in the ‘80’s.
That wasn't my point. You decried the press (which I am no friend of, to be sure) for 'disclosing her identity in that neighborhood'. My point was that the neighborhood knew her identity without a single word being disclosed by the press. She resides there, in fact lived right across the street where the incident took place.
No mention of a husband, or other man in her home, so the inference is she lives alone. If this neighborhood is truly as bad as it seems, she would have been targeted before this time, simply by being elderly (retirement age), and alone. That she has not been tells me that possibly she is in far less physical danger than you at present fear.
That said, *none* of us are ever truly completely safe, wherever we may be, on any square inch of planet Earth. That's just the way things are...

And of course, the police are now declaring that there was no racial motive involved in the beating, ergo it wasn’t a hate crime.
She has to sleep sometime.
They’ll get her.
