On April 5 an 83-year-old Huntsville, Alabama, man retrieved a handgun and shot a home intruder in the chest.
According to WAFF 48, the homeowner heard a knock at his back door "around 12:45 a.m." and a man saying he needed help. The homeowner "turned to call police when the burglar kicked in the glass door and entered the home."

Good shooting!
If he had a “better” caliber, the perp would not have been “diving” through anything.
When I’m too weak to rack my .45, I’ll switch to the .357 for primary defense.

I'll bet that 40 years ago this guy would have delivered a head shot.I guess one’s abilities diminish with age.
To: kingattax
Hopefully the perp will try to tough out a chest wound.
That always works.

Makes me feel good when a normal person defends himself against a ‘poor’ ‘downtrodden’ ‘victim’ ‘oppressed’ member of the ‘underclass.’
Why the left wants to take guns away from normal people: So the slobs can waltz right in and take what is ‘rightfully’ theirs.

I didn't see what cartridge his pistol was chambered in, but short of artillery, there isn't much that is a guaranteed instant kill to the chest.
Only severing the spinal cord or exploding the brain can ensure an instant kill.
I've shot deer through the chest and had them run 100 yards. Postmortem showed an exploded heart and gelatinized lungs, and I don't think you'll ever beat the destructive power of a .25-06 with any pistol round.

Ignoring the main issue for a moment, why do reporters always say the person “retrieved” a hand gun.? It’s not like he threw it away and then went to get it back. Why not simply say the guy “got” his handgun?
Thank you, rant over.

maybe writing “retrieved” is an attempt at appearing to be super-intelligent.

Every one of my Marine Corps and then Air Force weapons instructors made it clear that in any situation other than a fixed sniper shot with scope, you aimed for center mass; you’re not shooting at a static target but at one that moves. Assure the hit/knockdown with center mass and apply the double-tap rule if there is any doubt as to mortality.

.357 has a larger kick than a .45 1911A. That is why when my shoulder is sore I choose the .357 for the massage. If it’s really sore I’ll go for the 303 Enfield.
