Thousands Riot In The Streets of Isla Vista

The trouble started about 8 p.m. Saturday night as sheriff's deputies responded to two stabbings on Camino Del Sur. Two people were taken to the hospital. Their injuries are unknown.
About 9:30 p.m., a UCSB police officer was hit in the head with a backpack full of liquor bottles. Two Santa Barbara County sheriff's deputies also responded and were injured. One deputy was hit with a bottle and will undergo surgery on his hand. The violence escalated and another deputy was hit in the head with a brick. The UCSB police officer and both deputies are expected to be fine.
About 10:30 p.m., it turned into a riot with people in the crowd tearing down stop signs, setting mattresses on fire, and throwing more bottles, bricks and other objects at law enforcement. All emergency personnel were told to leave the area for their safety including paramedics and county firefighters.

It was my experience that in my college days (1979+) it was the kids from the more conservative families that were doing the most party damage. Away from the rule of law, as it were, for the first time. And it was "Animal House" thinking when I was there.
FWIW, I was watching a George Carlin bit earlier today on Netflix and one thing he said that stuck was (paraphrase) "if you have people opposing each other look at their hats"...
