Conservatives are about self-reliance, private charity, small government - which adds up to promoting local community strength vs. government strength. It was nice that a stranger stepped up to help this woman. I don't care what nice story is presented in the media (and there are a lot) - EBT/Food Stamps and top-down Federal social-engineering programs actually create more poverty and dependency than they resolve.
Bravo for you! My life circumstances changed over the last year and I understand what you are saying. There are moochers and cheaters in today’s world (as in any world) but with Obama’s economics, more and more of the middle class are falling out of the system. Which, of course, is intended.
a great act of kindness and charity is always a blessing, even to the giver. It is wise to remain humble and quiet though, lest the obozo and his minions out law such acts.
Charity is wonderful as long as the able recipients don’t make it a career choice.
Too many lazy scumbags out there #ing it up for those that really need it. An empty belly on occasion for these lazy thieves might not be a bad thing. Does saying this make me part of the “Dead Beats” crowd?
I have no problem with giving money and aid to the poor.
My problem is with those who have defrauded me for large amounts pretending to need money and giving it to their drug addicted relatives.

After Hurricane Sandy, I met a man outside the 7/11 who was allowed to ask for contributions for himself and his dog. He had lost everything in the storm. I didn’t spend much time mulling over whether he was a crook or not. Not because I’m a saint (God knows!) but I knew from my own life how Sandy had messed life up for everyone. I only had a few bucks in my pocket - I hope others helped. Being America, I’m sure they did.
The fact is that the government does help needy people. Not all people who receive govt disbursements deserved it. Heck, maybe not even most people who receive govt disbursements deserve it. But the govt does help some, maybe many, deserving people who have an honest run of bad luck.
Don't forget, our government based many of its laws re charity upon the teachings of Christ. That's not a thing they like to admit, but it's true.
P.S......reading further, it didn’t take long for his prediction to pan out did it?

When I cop an attitude, I call that judging. I do that way too much. The story Kartographer posted is a good one. I'd like to have that opportunity, but I tend to judge way too damn fast.

That's a truly ignorant sounding post. First, you don't know "most all the poor" in this country. You have no idea how they got there. You like to console yourself that they did something to deserve it, that way you can rationalize your own stinginess where the needy are concerned.

If such a thing ever happens, you don't have enough guns or bullets to stop starving humanity from annhiliating you. Read a history book about nations thrust into famine.
A certain great American playwright had his heroine say “I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.” I hope everyone here on FR never has to depend on anyone but if they do, the kindness of strangers is a blessed thing.
