Despite what constituents outside of Washington might think, members of Congress are underpaid, a House Legislative Branch appropriator suggested Thursday.
Virginia Democrat James P. Moran said he plans to highlight the injustice by introducing an amendment to the Legislative Branch bill during its full committee markup, and at floor consideration of the bill. Moran made the comments while the bill that funds members $174,000 salaries was being marked up in the Legislative Branch subcommittee.
I think the American people should know that the members of Congress are underpaid, Moran told CQ Roll Call. I understand that its widely felt that they underperform, but the fact is that this is the board of directors for the largest economic entity in the world.
The senior appropriator pointed out that some members have taken to living out of their offices to save money, while others have small little apartment units that make it impossible to spend the time they should with their families.

There’s the joke of the century. Congress hasn’t passed a budget in over 6 years, we are up to our eyeballs in debt and insane new laws and regulations. They all need to be fired not given a raise.
Maybe he should do everyone a favor and go find another job?
Fine he wants a per diem, we provide a dormitory with ten guys per room in bunk beds with a common bath and shower down the hall.
We change the time in the legislature to the months of July October and September to do the budget and get their business done and go home.
Of course we would not have Air Conditioning in the dorms so they get a sense of urgency to do their jobs and go home where they do less damage.
I wish I could find a job that pays that much where I have a staff that does all my work and I just have to “vote” occasionally, play golf, travel the world, write a book, and hang out.
pay them $10.10 per hour
Why so much?
Right now we have two groups in congress: the very rich that don't need a high income, and morons that are over-paid and couldn't get a job doing anything else.
Offering more money would bring in more candidates of higher quality.
Where the congressman errs is in suggesting that the current congress deserves more money. Probably not.
But offering substantially more money for the next congress would bring in all sorts of quality people. Many in the current congress would probably lose their jobs to new challengers.
This person lives in outer space. Congress people are way overpaid. Should be about half of current pay and maybe even less than that. All they do is spend the nation into bankruptcy. Should really be in jail.
I understand that its widely felt that they underperform, but the fact is that this is the board of directors for the largest economic entity in the world.

How can one brag about his lack of accomplishments especially when the ‘entity’ is 17 trillion (give or take) in debt?
I have figured before we should just pick a number, say 2 million each per year.
The only perk would be the building to meet in and Security while at the building.
Your staff would come out of the 2 million.
Your housing would come out of the 2 million.
If you want to hire your wife, your mother, your mother in law etc, no problem.
Go off on a ‘fact finding’ junket, pay your own way.
Your transportation would be PAID once a year for the ‘annual mandatory meeting’ to and from your home district.
A caller on Chris Plante this AM suggested that since they want to down size the Military, take some of the Military housing and let ‘them’ (Congress) live there.
Another one suggested taking St Elizabeths and turning it into Congressional Housing and Quarters.
No one in elected office at any level should get more then a base salary of $100,000.00
Healthcare through Obamacare
Gas allowance if they use their own car/ with documentation
A small allowance for office/material etc.
Term limits on ALL elected offices of 2 terms.
No lifetime pension either. They pay into SS like everyone else.
A lot of people are underpaid these days, deal with it.
He’s not counting what they steal.
Of course we did. But Moran’s name fits him well.
This guy has announced his retirement. That’s why he can get away with this kind of laughable stuff.
If they’re so underpaid why do they go to extreme and illegal methods to get re-elected?
When they get out they get very high paid no-show jobs. The ruling class takes care of it’s own.
If you are looking for underpaid legislators, just look at Harry Reid. Made multi-millions while in office earning a less than $200K yearly salary. Lives in one of the plushest DC hotels.
That is why I spell his last name Greed.
He loves to legislate profits for his land deals.
These are the cockroaches that believe our American service men and woman, who actually do defend the Constitution and America as they have sworn, are overpaid!
