I thought it was low visibility conditions that sank the Titanic, doubt a drone would work in the fog or a storm either.

Looking down from the air you can see underwater details that can't be seen from the surface.
Like if that 'burg has any spurs sticking out, and how far.

Is a good idea, and can feed ship's current GPS position back to drone for recovery.

Downside is UAVs (UAV's) available to civilians have limited time on station (generally electric), so launch only in questionable conditions/locations.
