Josephine Joey Gay was one of 20 children and six adults killed in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. on Dec. 14, 2012.
You have two choices, said Bob Gay, Joeys father and a 1978 graduate of Calvert Hall College High School in Towson. You can choose love or you can go another way. Knowing my daughter, choosing love was the only way.
The 7-year-old will be honored at the second annual Joeys Purple Ball June 14 at Calvert Hall. The event benefits the pending non-profit Safe and Sound, comprised of Sandy Hook parents and community members who lost children, friends and loved ones in the shooting.
Joeys mother, Michele Gay, is a co-founder of Safe and Sound.
Through Safe and Sound, Michele and co-founder Alissa Parker, whose daughter Emilie also died in the Sandy Hook tragedy, are working to educate school communities about simple and inexpensive ways to make their buildings safer, particularly during emergencies due to an intruder, the weather or a fire.
Theres nothing political about it, divisive about it, said Michele, a former teacher. Its not rocket science. Its a matter of getting going and collaborating with others around you.
Last year, Joeys Purple Ball raised more than $50,000 for Joeys Fund through the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism, which provides grants for families with children with autism. Joey had autism and apraxia. April is autism awareness month.
The Gays formed Joeys Fund days after their daughters death.

Well, Step One would be undercover armed guards to prevent a shooter from ever getting started.
Step Two would be armed teachers who are trained and proficient.
Nothing stops an active shooter like someone returning fire.
Anything else is just fluff.
I think they should train and arm the maintenance crew.
Perhaps the reason little has been heard about this organization is because they aren’t affiliated with the Sandy Hook exploiting anti-gun groups: http://www.safeandsoundschools.org/frequently-asked-questions-safe-and-sound-schools/
Gosh, being a Sandy Hook parent sure has a lot of perks to it!
And there is a surprising number who seem to be attending gun control meetings so they can “share their story” to a silenced room.
It would be great if someone were to follow one of them out to a car and see where they ACTUALLY came from.
I am beginning to suspect Sandy Hook has more to it than we have been told.
“...arm the maintenance crew...”
As long as there are at LEAST two armed people there, people who have demonstrated proficiency and know how to handle firearms, then the probability of a massacre such as occurred goes dramatically down.
If the ability to interdict the shooter - and stop him/her either BEFORE they are able to shoot, or immediately after, is present, the body count potential goes down.
Otherwise, it’s fluff. Locked-down doors, alarms, huddling together in one location - just makes it easier to locate and massacre.
Our children are forced to be in these places by state diktat - and they currently are defenseless there. And when this crap happens, as if the horror of it isn’t enough, we get the liberal Blood Dance immediately screaming to ban guns, like that will ever stop anything.
They didn’t even wait 24 hours after Sandy Hook. The kooks were coming out of the woodwork within a few hours of it.
Parents should start demanding an unobtrusive armed presence in the schools. Retired cops, security guards, armed teachers, volunteer parents, whatever. Someone should be there - preferably with backup - able to stop a shooter in his tracks.
The First Responder is ALWAYS the man on the scene at the moment it happens, and this is where it needs to be met - head-on, at the moment.
Maybe have a local LEO program - so that the faces of the armed people are KNOWN to the local responding cops (the SECOND responders), and they don’t mistake them for the active shooter.
There ARE simple solutions to this - people just have to be sane and rational - and UNEMOTIONAL - enough to understand that this is the only way to stop a potential slaughter.
We’re a long way from rational and sane right now, thanks to leftard indoctrination about guns.
It’s about time to take BACK the discussion and the debate.
I have questions about Sandy Hook that are dragging me inexorably into the conspiracy abyss.
Q: Does Safe and Sound take a position on gun control?A: We do not. We choose to focus on keeping children safe in schools by empowering school communities to improve their safety and security practices, plans, and measures. We believe this is the most effective way to keep schools safe in the face of the many possible dangers and threats they may face. We believe this is the most direct and productive way to affect change now.
Q: Does Safe and Sound have a position on security guards and/or police officers in schools?
A: We advocate for highly specific preparations, plans, and measures tailored to the safety and security needs of each school building and community. Security guards and police officers are one possible measure schools can put in place to improve safety. At Safe and Sound, we advocate for multiple layers of protection in order to best secure the safety of your school community.
Further, a thoughtful, professional security assessment within one community may warrant the employment of security guards or police officers while it may not be warranted or practical in another community. This decision belongs to each individual school community and will depend on the needs, budget, and desires of that community.
At least one of the proposals linked at its site involves a gun safe at school, however there would be only one rifle and the safes would be accessible by fingerprint recognition, and only the school's resource officer would have access to the rifle.
Yes, in addition to the other obvious flaws, I’m asking “what if the school’s resource officer is on leave, late for work, at a dental appointment, or (ahem) dead?”
Gosh, being a Sandy Hook parent sure has a lot of perks to it!

Quite the perk, that of having your child murdered in elementary school.
Really, Mr. K., perks?
There are individuals who claim the incident never happened, that it was made up out of whole cloth as an Obammunist plot to turn the people against the second amendment.
I can't look at a murdered child as being a "perk".
