"Toothpaste makes an excellent and inexpensive polish"... how do you apply?...problems with swirling pattern left behind?....do you use micro cloth ?

how do you apply?... Apply sparely in small circular motions with a cloth that is less abrasive that the toothpaste.
I suggest you polish a small section first to get the hang of it. I doubt that young people have ever spit-shined shoes but the same principle applies.
