An elderly widow who had fallen behind in her property taxes discovered she longer owned her home after trying to sell it to pay off her debt.
Unbeknown to Hertha Handler, ownership of her $1.2 million Oyster Bay Cove home in Long Island has been transferred to an investor who bought two of the liens against the property.
The 73-year-old widow had lived in the property for more than 40 years but after her husband died several years ago, she slipped behind on taxes and had an outstanding debt of $200,000.
Multiple liens had been made against the property, where Mrs Handler had raised her two sons, but she had no idea ownership had been transferred to investor Albert Kalimian.
By buying just two of the liens from Oyster Bay Cove village for about $3,000 each, Mr Kalimian was able to take possession of the property.

Do you pay your taxes, slave? I bet JimRob pays his taxes.
What you say is true, but I would also add that property taxes that fund schools and roads the elderly no longer use are confiscatory and, legal or not, using them as a justification to take a retired senior’s property is immoral.
More trolling.
What was that Declaration thingee and the succeeding Revolution about again?
I think the Founders were fed up with being slaves to the British Crown.
They weren't pleased with their situation, unlike you...
Good point. Most seniors also have full equity in their homes, and are not inventing money out of a 30-year mortgage loan.
A younger person who is using all those governmental services generally doesn't have full equity in their "property".
The government is just asset-stripping in the case of the elderly.
In order for them to foreclose on arrears, the back taxes need to be a significant portion of the current assessed value. Once the amount of the arrears equals the assessed value, then they can foreclose on the property.
I use this method on a seasonal home in NY to keep the taxes and assessment stable.
The towns assess waterfront, and especially seasonal(s) at decidedly different rates because they know you don’t vote in that district.
They raise the assessment and thus my taxes, I refuse to pay for a couple of years and they lower them down to where they should be. I negotiate the arrears back down to the third assessment level, and pay them in full and the loop starts all over again. I have managed to keep my assessment flat to what I paid for the property 20 years ago.
The town assessor, town clerk, and the county clerk know me on a first name basis. They know, that I know what they are doing and I won’t stand for it. Tax Grievance Day is a waste of time and they will only give you a token reduction, but your assessment still went up. In most cases higher than what the real world market value is.
I maintain that The Children should be able to take classes in taxation in high skool. Of course, that would crimp the style of our Owners.
I thought so.
