7.5 Quake On Puente Hills Thrust Fault Could [Could] Be Disastrous

The Puente Hills thrust fault, which brought Friday night’s magnitude-5.1 quake centered in La Habra and well over 100 aftershocks by Sunday, stretches from northern Orange County under downtown Los Angeles into Hollywood — a heavily populated swath of the Los Angeles area.

A magnitude-7.5 earthquake along that fault could prove more catastrophic than one along the San Andreas, which runs along the outskirts of metropolitan Southern California, seismologists said.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that such a quake along the Puente Hills fault could kill 3,000 to 18,000 people and cause up to $250 billion in damage. In contrast, a larger magnitude 8 quake along the San Andreas would cause an estimated 1,800 deaths

Ive never heard that term before(Scared the Pelosi out of me LOL) but I may have to steal that one from you :) quakes that happen during the day don’t scare me much, especially the one a few days ago, even though people in La Habra felt it real bad, for me it was more like being on a boat, like a swaying motion, after all Im about 40 miles away so its far enough
Now Northridge, even though Im about 40 minutes away(On a good day when its not heavy traffic) damn that was a horrible quake, if that had happened during the day the death toll would have been in the hundreds for sure. The Kaiser Permanente parking lot on Cadillac and La Cienaga buckled, my Mom had an appt that day she would have been in that parking lot. CSUN, the parking lot also buckled, my brother went to that school during that time, imagine all the people in the parking lot in both locations. I still remember how the Northridge Fashion Center looked after wards, they had to rebuild the entire thing..we lost our fireplace but that was nothing compared to what others lost

I’m quite familiar with Turnbull Canyon. We used to live a mile from it.

‘We COULD all die.”

Studies show that the National Death Rate is holding steady at 100%.

Easy now.

The quote: “ - - - A magnitude-7.5 earthquake along that fault COULD prove more catastrophic - - - “ is just USGS hype to get more funding from The Obamanation. [Caps are mine.]

Coulda, woulda and shoulda are NOT on the Richter Scale.

Small earthquakes are good in that stresses are relieved frequently, thus reducing the odds of “the big one” occurring soon.

That is where I learned to drive. Back then it was a stick shift only. Live in Memphis for a lot of years. Making me homesick.

According to someone on another quake thread, these 5s are good because they release the tension that could build up to a 7. Sounds logical.

My grandpa lived in Cali his whole life. He used to say that as long as there were ‘small’ quakes, there won’t be a be one.

USGS doesn’t agree. Guess we’ll find out.
