Last October we went to our local county shelter to check out dogs to adopt. Our shelter has 50 cages for dogs and they were all full with only six dogs that were not Pit Bulls. The next county south of us had about the same ratio.
Our local shelter had a German Sheppard/Hound mix that we adopted and she is one of the sweetest animals we have ever been around.
Our shelter has its usual: one pit bull and four pit bull mixes (and some cats and a chicken).
I feel bad for a family going there looking for an affordable dog to adopt, and I think it is irresponsible for the town to enable such a situation. (The head of their shelter is a big pit bull advocate.)
