Pit bulls are thug accessories. Their owners tend to be lower class, the type of nasty people you know are lower class even when unaccompanied by the beasts.
Every time we go to the dog park the other dog owners are on pins and needles when one shows up. One got into a fight with a smaller dog last year, the owner of the (smaller) dog tried to break it up. He succeeded, but not without losing a finger to the pit.
I hate the breed.
The ‘star’ of Pit Bulls & Parolees supports regulation of the breed. She has more experience with pits than anyone and doesn’t think they should be out in the general population with people.
In 2013, pits accounted for more than 90% of the dog fatalities. Mauling rates were almost as bad. (Mauling means massive hospitalization, trauma surgery, and life-time disability. Not a joke.)
And yet, all I see on Craigslist are pit puppies for sale. No labs. No poms. Just more pits. They’re being bred for money, not for quality dogs. And people feel sorry for them and think “I can raise them right” so they adopt them and keep the chain going. So sad.
We had a half chow half lab when our kids were little. Browndog was highly overprotective of kids. We lived by an apartment complex and kids would wander over to play with ours. Parents would come looking for their kids. Until the dog knew who they were he wouldn’t let them near their kids. They would come to the door and ask if they could have their kids back.

Do you live in a state that allows CCW?

Yes, the shelters are full of pits, far disproportionate in number considering how many are pets. Gee I wonder why?
I know a guy, a well-educated professional acquaintance that I thought highly of until he told me that one of his three rescues was a pit. As if that weren't bad enough, he went on to tell me about his two-year old granddaughter, that I'm sure visits his house all the time. From now on I don't I'm keeping my distance from this guy -- he's a low-information dog owner! It's a disaster waiting to happen. How do I tell him nicely, "YOU'RE A MORON"?
Yes, and yes of course I do, though I'm with Ted!
From now on I'm keeping my distance from this guy.
Everyone should be able to come into contact with pit bulls if they so desire. IN A ZOO!
It seems these dogs zero in on their target and won’t stop and can’t be distracted. An old man fought 3 pit bulls off of a women in Houston last week. He’d get them off. They’d back off then come after again. He said “They wanted the woman.” Eventually they ran off.
Pit bulls are just like any other dog (sarc).
However, when they do attack the damage in enormous and an unarmed man does not stand a chance.
So one has to ask: Would you rather have a squirt gun laying around the house with the wife and kids, or would you rather have a loaded and cocked AK-47 in the corner?
I love they way they are always "shocked" that their sweet pitbull could do any harm.
Pet lions can also be tamed. . . Seriously? Would you have an animal in YOUR house that has the ability to kill an grown adult, as well as a defenseless child. Grow a brain. People who mix killer breeds of dog with children should be in jail... period.
It’s not the energy, it’s the predator instinct. Greyhounds, for example, are actually fairly placid when in small spaces, but will try to kill something vulnerable when the opportunity arises.
I’m still waiting for the media to report on a pack of feral, rabid chihuahuas mauling and killing someone. Hasn’t happened yet.
I remember back in the early 1980s a neighbor I had next door to me that had a Chow. It never barked but it looked at me with menacing, Cujo-like eyes that indicated that wanted me for dinner.
Then on the other side of me I had this small, white dog that barked day and night. It even learned how to climb a chain link fence and sometimes came over to my side. I hated that dog, too, because of all that constant yappiness.
Yeah, I saw that. It wasn’t very well received either.
“A neighbor had a pit bull. His daughter was a youngster at the time. I asked the neighbor if he was concerned the dog would attack. He said with proper care and supervision, he felt the dog would fit in well with the family.
The put bull was a sweetheart. I rubbed her belly one day and I was her friend for life. Every time she would see me, she would drop to the ground and roll on her back for her belly rub.”
I have the exact same story, but with a somewhat different ending. My friend’s American Staff was a complete sweetheart. One day Doug came home from softball practice and was standing in the living room talking on the phone to a friend. Daisy attacked him and latched onto his thigh. Friend on the phone heard Doug screaming and called 911. By the time the medics got there, Doug had killed his pet with his softball bad, and he was lying on the floor, bleeding out. Medics told him two more minutes and he would have been dead. But she was such a sweet, well-cared-for, and loved dog.
