Researchers now know that residual tobacco smoke, dubbed thirdhand smoke, combines with indoor pollutants such as ozone and nitrous acid to create new compounds. Thirdhand smoke mixes and settles with dust, drifts down to carpeting and furniture surfaces, and makes its way deep into the porous material in paneling and drywall.
Hotel workers who sweep, vacuum, change linens, and dust the rooms of smokers are exposed to higher doses of thirdhand smoke than are the guests who stay a few nights in smoking rooms
Those who move into houses or apartments formerly owned by smokers might be exposed as well. And thirdhand smoke is difficult to eliminate

“If this thing is representative of the quality of articles now appearing in National Geographic,-——————”

I gave up on them when they started with the “Nat Geo” nonsense. I guess they think 7 syllables are too tough for the masses to handle.
I’ll say this about the world today-——it certainly is interesting. Infuriating, but interesting.
.
“Even looking at a cigarette is harmful.”
LOL, that’s why the nannies are against e-cigs. I think the real reason is they need to tax them.
National Geographic is hazardous to your mental health - first, second, and third hand exposure is toxic.

Smoke odor isn’t hard to get rid of. Ozone treatment does a dandy job, especially on textiles, upholstery, etc. as compared with walls and other hard surfaces.
It should be noted that ozone needs to be handled properly, preferably by professionals.
Also ozone gets rid of the odor. There’s no guarantee I’m aware of that it neutralizes all the supposedly toxic chemicals in smoke residue.
Really stupid article. There is absolutely nothing unique about cigarette smoke. It’s just the smoke produced by burning a plant, tobacco, and paper.
The only unique part of the plant is nicotine, which isn’t toxic at all in the quantites involved here, and indeed isn’t associate much with the negative effects of smoking.
Those are caused by the tars, or by-products of combustion, which are very similar to those created by burning any other plants, like wood or pot.
The negative health effects of cigarettes are not due to the toxicity of their smoke relative to other burning things, but rather to the fact that people seldom stand around and deeply inhale campfire smoke for years on end. It is entirely a dose issue.
BTW, there are much more toxic compounds produced by burning certain things, but those are mostly synthetic materials of various types, notably plastics. Used to work in fire restoration cleanup, and being around the stuff could make you pretty sick.
As a former liberal, I have a residue of third-hand liberalism still inflaming my emotions from time to time. Hopefully, that does not make me dangerous to society.
Third-hand Nanny State PING!
Progressives need some first hand exposure to hemp. Rope.
One of my favorite cartoons had someone complaining to a waiter that the people at the next table were TALKING about smoking.
.
You will have to ban all varieties od the nightshade.
. the deadly nightshade
. tobacco
. tomato
First hand liberalism is more dangerous to my health.
But abortin is utopia.
There was a thread earlier today about Spanish protesters with signs saying “anti-abortion is genocide”.
You got that right. Drug Warriors are among the worst of the lot.
Thanks for the ping!
I kicked them to the curb, dropping a subscription I had held for multiple decades, at least 15 years ago, probably closer to 20 now.
No crusader I, I 'll just report the facts. The entire HVAC set-up, including all ductwork absolutely had to be changed. The wall-to-wall carpeting (always a terrible idea) was junked and replaced with tile and wood, after the subflooring was steam cleaned with TCP. Ditto the walls. Ditto the appliances. Took about five rinses to run clear. The kitchen cabinets, the blinds (fuggedabout the drapes) were permeated. This might be a good thing, as I have not seen a bug ... and this is FL (aka "The White Man's Grave," as they once called Africa.)
But yes, this is real, really disgusting, and really hard to take. The smell is not entirely gone, as the attic crawl spaces and insulation still emit aged Eau de Lucky Strike. Now, I suppose the real question is, "Is this mess actually bad for one's health?"
Reasonable answer: "It can't be good ... but more than likely not." In my case I am no fan of AC and since this is off the beach, I just leave the place open and it feels great. BTW, The marijuana crowd has a (VERY) small point here. Sure the smoke from a joint is probably as toxic or more toxic than the effluvium from a Lucky. However, it is also accurate to point out that the potheads are not usually four-pack-a-day men. However, their second-hand smoke can make one's head spin a bit. The number of 60-something Floridians with Alzheimers might also serve as warning to pot fans. Not that Floridiots were ever known as deep thinkers.
“The bans on smoking everywhere came about because the majority rules.”
Or to be more specific, it was when the progressives transitioned societal thinking from being a Representative Republic to a Democratic Socialist Government. If we still lived in the former, then the only “majority” voice that would matter would be the name(s) on the deed of the property. Since the progressives have successfully tranistioned us to the latter, we now empower the government to project dictates.
You are celebrating the success of progressivism. This succes WILL lead to the government you have empowered projecting more dictates. In fact, I’d bet that this government will eventually mandate (dictate) that Churches must perform same sex marriage.
When you empower a government to project dictates, you shouldn’t be shocked when those in government become dictators.
Nah ... it'll be "historical smoke" (residual traces from the 1600s-1800s) ...
“Progressives need some first hand exposure to hemp. Rope.”
Nice!
I can't play loud music late at night in my own yard, I can't have more than 3 dogs, I can't burn trash at my house, I can't target practice with my gun, I can't keep my horse at my house, fireworks are a huge no no.
We used to live in the country and I could do all of those things and no one cared.
