Imagine if clinics in developing countries were equipped with an inexpensive yet durable tool that could help medical personnel identify and diagnose a variety of deadly diseases like Malaria...

Juxtapose this with all the stories posted lately that science is going to hell.
Science is going to hell. Engineering, which requires that things actually work, is still ok.
Where can you get one?
.
Yep if we could cure all the disease in the world we’d all starve to death because of overpopulation. Now if we spent the money we waste on wars to develop better ways to grow food we’d have a different ending.
So go convince all the warlords, dictators, wanna be gangsters and drug lords they are wasting their money when they could be helping mankind. While you’re at it convince people to give up having sex because they are having more babies than the environment can handle.
You are wrong about that. As long as people are free, more people equals more prosperity.

Wrigley’s makes billions selling a product that retails for less than $1.
People have been trying to “save Africa” for the last 100 years. Every gadget in the world has been invented from $50 computers to lights that use your body heat as energy, to paper microscopes
Why does non of it work?
There are very few places in the world that don’t have access to a microscope. A basic compound microscope can be purchased for $50. Remote clinics do need water purifiers, instrument sterilizers, refrigerators, and reliable power.
...and DDT
“Why does none of it work?”
We just haven’t tried hard enough - we need to redouble our efforts.
Why would a clinic need DDT?
Nah. There'd be plenty of people to plant and harvest the crops...
