Missouri resident Niakea Williams was at home, in bed when she got a phone call from Walnut Groves Elementary School. She was told that her son, Michael, who has Aspergers syndrome, was panicking. Niakea quickly head over to her sons school, got buzzed in, and immediately went to find Michael. As KMOV News 4 reports, what happened next has Ms. Williams furious.
Ms. Williams, though she had been buzzed in as a known parent by school officials, apparently broke protocol when she did not sign in before heading to Michaels classroom to console him. Williams admits this but feels she was justified, telling KMOV, I didnt sign the book, but I had to check on my son. She told the principal to bring the book to her and shed sign it, but the administrator had other ideas. Niakea recounts, She said, Oh no, Ive already called the police.
She had indeed called the police. Calverton Park Police showed up and put the school in a 12-minute lockdown due to an unauthorized entry to a school. Williams was arrested and taken to the police station on trespassing charges. This all despite her being a known parent at the school who actually had met with the principal just one day prior.

And the taxpayers foot the bill (Huh. That seems to be a reoccurring theme....)
I tend to agree. This could well be a genuine case of school administrator bumbling and overreaction, or it could be that there’s a lot more to this story that hasn’t been reported. I think back to a few months ago when Yahoo ran a half-dozen stories about that waitress who allegedly got a “homophobic” message on a meal ticket receipt. Nobody at Yahoo bothered to question or even take a close look at the waitress’ version of events in that story, until it became obvious it was a complete hoax.
So, yeah, I’m gonna wait and see on this one. I don’t trust school administrators much, but I trust journalists even less.
By the way, I can guarantee you that there is at least one other parent in the school who enters *without signing in* (a spouse of a school employee, a parent *liked*/favored by the school administration.
All it takes is for witnesses to verify that Jane Doe/John Doe was in the building and to check the sign in log to see if he/she signed in to prove.
Walking past the office, going to the classroom and telling someone to bring the sign-in sheet - is not willingness to sign in.
The “buzzing in” has to happen with everyone - even those who will not be allowed past the office. You’re being buzzed in NOT for free access to the school, but you are being buzzed in to go to the office to “get the clearance” to go past the office.
I’ve seen stupid people interact with the police and they DO get themselves arrested. I’ve been around many such instances when another person would have walked away from a police encounter - and a “real stupid person” gets arrested. Usually I’m saying to myself ... “He’s going to get arrested!” And he does ... :-) ...
And no ... they don’t know too much, because certain types of people are mouthy and draw a lot of attention to themselves - and quickly get to be known by others around them.
She looks like the IDIOT she’s already demonstrated herself to be!
I’ve been “waved on” when I’ve come to the office before. But I did go to the office to sign in and I was given permission to “go on” from the office without signing in (that was one time). But note ... the purpose of going to the office is “getting permission” to proceed past the office. That’s the key item.
The school called her. The school buzzed her in. Mom has an open and shut case. It’s too bad that all the other parents will be paying for her lawsuit winnings via taxes, but that’s the price of strangling common sense with a staff of bureaucratic know-nothings.
No, whether a person is acting wisely or foolishly, in all cases, the police *choose to make an arrest*. Sometimes they choose wisely, and sometimes they choose foolishly.
And a parent in a free nation does not need to “get clearance” to attend their own child-—unless you believe that the child is the *property of the school* and that the parent requires *permission* to manage their own child’s affairs on school grounds.
Now, you could argue that this account demonstrates that we are not a free nation, but in that case, one would hope you wouldn’t defend the practice.
You should be bothered that you are justifying *getting permission from government employees* to see YOUR child on a conservative forum.
Exactly.
Besides, “school policy” is not written law, and the schools would do well to remember that the children are not their property.
She didn’t get “clearance” at the office to proceed past the office. The “buzzing in process” ONLY gets you to the office and NOT to the rest of the school. That’s the process that’s in effect for most schools. I’ve been through it many times - even when I’ve been called to come down, by the school.
I wouldn’t want it any other way - because I expect that school to protect the child that I have there.
White Parent? Sue the Government school system? Sue the local uniformed tax collectors? Sue the town?
Good luck with that one.
The school is legally responsible to protect those children while they are there. That’s something that all parents consider absolutely mandatory.
Americans have become a people comfortable in our fascism.
A parent who has their child in a school does not want ANYONE bypassing the office to go directly into the school proper WITHOUT permission being granted. And they take that position for the safety of their own child.
And which children, pray tell, are in danger from a mother who checks on her own child?
