I’ve had three basset hounds and they are incredibly, and adorably, entertaining. Whenever someone asks, “Why do you like them so much?” I just respond, “It’s the face, man. It’s the face.”
Aside from that, they are friendly and loving, and make great watchdogs. And anyone who thinks they are dumb is smoking pixie dust. They are indoor-outdoor and very child-friendly.
For anyone considering a dog, I would recommend a basset hound without reservation.

Years ago, I had some friends in Puget Sound who had a pair of basset hounds. Those dogs were definitely clowns. I never saw them without laughing for the sheer joy that they exhibited.
They were just plain fun to watch.

We have three rescue dogs: a German shepherd/bloodhound mix, a border collie mix, and a basset hound. The basset is definitely the comedian of the bunch.

Like women, the face excuses a multitude of sins. No matter what he does, the face wins every time. About ten minutes ago, he growled at me for having brushed him too hard with one of dog hair-magnet gizmos. Again, the face won. Any other dog I would’ve smacked. But Walter was only gently chided.
