The book, Soldiers of Misfortune, documents the large number of American servicemen that were abandoned and forgotten during WW II and the wars since. Many were imprisoned and died in slave labor camps. Most presidents since WW II have continued to sweep that under the rug.

WASHINGTON — A high-ranking Russian official says that thousands of U.S. prisoners of war captured by the Germans had been transferred to the Soviet Union after World War II and that some were still living in Russia.
The official, Dmitri Volkogonov, a military adviser to President Boris N. Yeltsin of Russia, told a U.S. Senate committee yesterday that more than 22,000 U.S. soldiers had been taken to the Soviet Union from German prisoner-of-war camps.
The Russian official said most of the U.S. servicemen were returned to the United States shortly after the war, but that 119 U.S. citizens with Russian, Ukranian or Jewish names were kept behind.

I remember that thread very well, I even agreed with the “It’s all conspiracy talking points” at the time. But as time has gone by, I have seen how infested Free Republic gets at times by ‘Trolls’ and others with an agenda. I have gone back and looked at things with a more critical eye. And I am more skeptical of those who do the trolling.
So to put things straight, do I think Patton was assassinated? I don’t know. His death was awfully convenient for those we now know were Communist sympathizers and moles in the U.S. Government at the time.
What I do believe though is that the Post-WW II political scene would have been a LOT different if he had gone back to the U.S. and become an elected Public Official such as a Senator.

Extract: Counting WWII Prisoners of War and Internees
The immense problems of World War II record-keeping in the heat of battle, how POWs and internees are defined, and sometimes unknowable individual circumstances, make an authoritative determination of the precise number of POWs and internees held by Germany and Japan in WWII virtually impossible. In the case of POWs, Charles A. Stenger, formerly with the Veterans Administration (VA), developed a set of figures revised annually since 1976 for POWs and an estimate for current numbers of surviving POWs for the Department of Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee on Former Prisoners of War. According to Dr. Stenger, these figures were compiled in cooperation with the Department of Defense (DOD), the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Archives. They are recognized and used by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and other government agencies. Dr. Stenger lists 27,465 POWs in the Pacific, of whom 11,107 died while in detention. He estimates that 4,477 of the survivors are alive as of January 1, 2003.10
According to Dr. Stenger, figures for civilian internees are less solid. He lists 7,300 American civilians as having been interned by Japan, of whom he estimates 1,969 are alive as of January 1, 2002. He also cites an additional 13,000 Amerasians holding American citizenship who hid during this period, but who were never interned; he estimates that 1,528 of those 13,000 Amerasians are still alive as of January 1, 2002.11 The Office of the Army’s Provost Marshal General, Prisoner of War Division, listed 13,979 American civilian internees (including War, Navy, and Merchant Marine personnel) in its compilation of internees “Formerly Detained by the Japanese Government.”12 The Center for Internee Rights, Inc. (CFIR), an internee advocacy group, calculates that there were 13,996 civilian internees held by Japan, of which the Center calculated 1,497 to be alive as of January 1, 2000.13 According to a January 4, 2002 letter to the editor of the New York Times by Linda Goetz Holmes (see information about her at endnote 41), there are approximately 5,300 surviving U.S. POWs who were held by Japan.14

He had already said that he was giving up his officer’s commission and retirement benefits to go home and enter politics in opposition to an undisclosed political issue. We already know that Soviet POWs were being rounded up and shipped out of Trieste onboard a ship and disembarked at Sevastopol, where they were taken off the gangplank behind a wall and shot right there at the dock. When the allies balked at returning more of the Soviet POWs, Stalin held the Allied POWs hostage. The dispute from that point on is what did or did not happen to the Allied POWs in Soviet captivity and how many of them there were. Some sources put the number of American POWs at somewhere around 25,000 and British Commonwealth at about 38,000 or thereabouts if I remember correctly.
People, as we see with the airliner, are extremely reluctant to accept the maxim that Sh#t happens.

Yet another conspiracy theory that I don’t believe.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I don't believe this. I'm no expert, but I've read a lot about Donovon, particularly involving OSS ops in southern China and Indochina during and just after WWII, and have encountered nothing that would raise to the level of this scurrilous charge.
But it's always been easier to attack the dead than the living.

Yes, it is a theory and I am skeptical.
Seventy years ago there were no alternate sources of truthful information beyond what the newspaper editors chose to print. Anyone with direct, factual knowledge of the death of Patton is now dead.
Oh, I was not suggesting that you subscribed to it. It's actually interesting that some do believe it even though there is plenty of evidence that Patton died in a freak accident.
I cannot think of a conspiracy theory off the top of my head that I believe.
makes me friggin sick to see this criminal in chief asking for time to get re-elected, before agreeing to disarm and neuter us, further.
