A 7-Eleven clerk in Salem, Mass., says she was fired for giving a homeless man a free $1 cup of coffee last Thursday.
"He was freezing," Ava Lins, 19, told NewsCenter 5. "You could tell. It was one of the coldest nights of the month."
So she said she offered him a small cup of coffee, which would normally cost about a dollar.
Then, she said, her boss came in.
"My boss...grabbed his jacket and began screaming and yelling, 'Did you pay for this? Did you pay for this?' And I lied for him, I said, 'Yes,'" she said.
But when the boss pressed the issue, Lins confessed.
Then she was taken off the work schedule.
When first contacted for comment, Lins' boss Romany Youseff told NewsCenter 5 he couldn't let employees get away with stealing.
But after facing a public backlash, he said he's had a change of heart and Lins can come back to work this week.
"I told her it's OK. Everyone forget it. It's OK."
I think her heart was in the right place, just not her brain.
I had a friend way back when who was a bit of a bum, in and out of work, and very left-wing. One of his prior jobs was bicycle mechanic, and he was quite good at it. He got fired though, for “over-delivery” of service. When people would bring their bikes in, they’d pay for a particular repair, and he’d just go ahead and fix everything that was wrong with it. He thought it was so unfair that they fired him for “doing the right thing.” He just didn’t get it when I tried to explain that he was giving away his boss’s money.
It cost because of the way the media portrayed the event. Heck, millions of dollars are lost because of the kind of press bias we see in this story. Does that make it OK?
If she hadn’t lied it probably wouldn’t have amounted to more than a “OK, but I don’t want those bums encouraged, don’t do it any more.”
Since she lied for such a trivial matter, and the boss had to unpeel the truth out of her, I can see him feeling uncomfortable with her sticking around.
It sounds like she is a little weaselly.
I noticed that. He did that instead of asking his employee what was going on.
He should have allowed the clerk to pay for it and then said, it was nice but please dont do it that way again.
He had a different approach there too...
7-11 Clerk Says She Was Fired For Giving Freezing Homeless Man A $1 Cup Of CoffeeLins says that after she admitted to Youseff that she had given the homeless man the coffee, he made her pay for it, which she did. The homeless man returned the next day and asked for another coffee and Youseff made Lins pay for that one too.
Let me clarify: There is nothing wrong with good, Christian charity. But, there are good, practical reasons to ensure it’s done anonymously.
BINGO! (Sorry, don't mean to shout, but that is the essence of this story missed by so many on this thread.)
Unless she paid for it with her own money she should have been fired!
The story reminds me of Ted Cruz’s ‘fillibuster” when he was telling stories about his old man. He started off as dishwasher and part of the deal was free food. So he always ate at the restaurant. When he moved up to cook, every time someone would order shrimp he would cook an extra one for himself.
Saturday mornings he indulged himself with his only purchase of food - a cup of coffee at the local diner. After several Saturdays of watching the waitress toss out the ends of the bread, he asked if she could save them for him rather than throwing them away. IIRC, she would give him the extras, and also toast a couple for him to have with his coffee.
I wonder what FDA rules that would violate today?
“There is always a practical reason for Christian values when doing business.”
15 You shall not steal.
I maintain that even if she did pay for it herself, she needed to be chewed out and told to stop it.
Reiterating: And, she lied about it, initially. Fired, by the standing policy.
How do you give someone a cup of coffee anonymously?
Reputation IS currency.
In a cup that doesn’t have your store’s logo emblazoned all over it. A “courtesy cup,” if you will.
So, having a reputation as a place that gives away free merchandise to hobos is a *good* thing. Got it.
You didn’t go to that link I provided, did you?
She stole a cup of coffee.
She gave it away.
She lied about it.
That’s wrong.
(If I were the boss I would have paid for the coffee and fussed at her. The first time.)
-——Is it her job to give away things that do not belong to her?-——
Only government worker drones can do that....
You give homeless men free coffee you start attracting homeless men to the business and repelling paying customers. It isn’t charity when you give away someone else’s resources and depress his income.
Everyone is missing the real issue here. That cup of coffee is not $1.00 It is $1.06 with the Ma. sales tax included. This so called “ good person” took that $ right out of Deval’s ( Gov. and friend of Obama) pocket. He is in the middle of a $9 million rehab of his office and needs every penny he can collect.
“She stole a cup of coffee. . . .”
And her boss assaulted the homeless man. On balance, I’d say what he did was worse. Much worse.
