After telling the congregation at the Miracle Faith World Outreach Church that he had been unfaithful to his wife, Bishop Bobby Davis died.

"After the service on Sunday the bishop's family asked us to remain in the church and the bishop confessed to us something that happened long ago," church elder Judy Stovall told the Connecticut Post. "He wanted to come clean with all of us. He wanted to ask our forgiveness."

Before he died, church members were screaming at Davis to show him their support.

"We were shouting, 'We forgive you, we love you,' but the stress of all of it -- he had a heart attack," Stovall said.

It’s all in the timing.

Maybe he got the “Two-Minute Warning”......

“And if I’m wrong, may God Strike me down dead.”

Yes. It is true — “For even while we were enemies of Christ, he died to save us.” (Romans)

And... John 3:17 “That through Him the world would be saved and not condemned.”

Paraphrasing both, but you have the right idea. God love ALL of us. But He does not like sin.

“I suppose that is possible but that should not be a reason for not doing what is right.”

He sinned against his wife not them. Why do this to her? Really the best thing was for him to announce that he was stepping down and let someone else take over the church while he worked on his marriage. He need not tell anyone why. Trust me I was a protestant, once. Nothing can make a church uneasy than to know the preacher man had an affair. Even worse than to deal with the preacher's wife after all that. Talk about walking on eggshells. That is drama I seriously don't need and makes me so glad I no longer have to deal with it.

Verga please explain how metmom is wrong on all counts. Or is this another of your IFs? Tell us how you are so right.

It was weak for him to go before the congregation with his personal failing. He should have just resigned if he was that upset over it.

If I was sitting in a pew I would have told him to shut up and then walked out. I don’t want to hear this kind of stuff, especially from a preacher.

What does he think that everyone should be shocked because he is a human?

The caveat is that I don’t know enough of what happened or his intentions so you can take my comment as general.

But I do disagree with you on what is weak and what is strong in this situation. With due respect to your position, my view is the weak move was to go before the congregation with it.

It is incidents like this that make the Catholic confessional booth seem like a far better idea.

Like with Teddy Kennedy? Now there's a deathbed confession for you. He may have confessed to God and a priest (which is very very good) but did TK have the intestinal fortitude to apologize or ask forgiveness to the family of Mary Jo Kopechne? That would be akin to this bishop confessing to his congregation, friends and family. The bishop did so publicly as we have a record of it. Did TK publicly confess? I don't know if he did.

And if he didn’t confess publicly, I could see him catching flack for trying to hide his sin. A lot of public figures are criticized for not admitting they’re human also, for putting themselves up on a pedestal.

Damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t.

Have you never heard of confession or asking for forgiveness? He only had to get right with the Lord. He decided to get right with his congregation as well.

He wronged God by sinning. We assume he went to the cross in repentance. To "get right" with God.

He wronged his wife, family and congregation and we see he confessed his sin. He "got right" with fellow man.

Amen!

We are responsible for the earthly consequences we create. God is longsuffering, merciful and kind. He will forgive us our tresspasses if we confess our sins. The earthly consequences of those sins live with us as you mentioned. A strained marriage or relationship with children or friends; a child from out of wedlock or adultery...take your pick.

Very wise words Mr. Verga.

The article said he confessed to his wife. The next step is to tender his resignation for "personal reasons", not make her look like a fool in front the rest of the community.

I can see your point. Perhaps he could have confessed to the elders to spare his wife's shame (as a gentlemen would do for a lady). However, as a bishop his sin was against the whole congregation IMO.
