An Alabama police chief has determined that one of his officers used appropriate force, when the cop arrived at the scene of a traffic accident and immediately shot an apparently unarmed Air Force airman.
The airman, 20-year-old Michael Davidson, was shot in the chest and nearly bled out before receiving medical aid, according to the Raw Story.
Davidson was driving to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He may have been driving erratically, according to the Ledger-Enquirer.
After clipping another vehicle, he pulled over to exchange insurance information with the other driver.
Eventually, Officer Phillip Hancock arrived on scene. Accounts differ as to what happened next.
Davidsons father claimed that Hancock shot his son almost immediately.
They couldnt have been there three or four seconds when I was shot, said Davidson, according to his fathers account.
Police Chief John McEachern, on the other hand, said that Hancock did not not fire until coming to the erroneous conclusion that Davidson was a threat.
Hancock ordered Davidson to put his hands on his head, and then fired, according to McEachern.
It was at this point that the officer perceived what he believed to be a threat, McEachern said. Officer Hancock then pulled his service weapon and fired two shots at the suspect.
One shot hit Davidson, severely injuring his stomach and colon. He may have permanent damage, and it is likely that he will be physically unable to serve in the Air Force.
The accounts agree that Davidson was unarmed when shot. He may have been holding his wallet, however. Its not clear whether Hancock mistook the wallet for a weapon.

In the minds of too many LEO's, all citizens are threats and can be shot at any time for any reason. This rogue behavior is bound to grow because Police leadership, unions, and prosecutors condone and protect this sort of criminal behavior.
The cop should face the same charges I would face if I made the same asinine decision.
There was some movie scene where the cops kept saying, “Don’t move! Get on the ground!”
You can equate their trigger-happiness with the steroids coursing through the veins of these LEO thugs. The communities and Police Chiefs that hire them, and the US Department of "Just-Us" that tolerate them, kinda like it this way; helps keep the sheeple under their thumb - sheeple, as in a significant portion of the US.
There is no situation that the presence of a cop will not make worse.
“these guys must be frightened out of their skulls on a deep emotional basis.”
Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia ran a country with a very
small crime rate. Almost every crime was punishable by
death. Some cops mistake or don’t know the difference
between fear and respect.
Some cops, at first, don’t understand the difference.
Respect is earned, demanding
it is fear not respect. Yes they are afraid. When they
realize that they and their fellow punk cops have made
it nearly impossible for them to earn the respect they
demand. All they have left is to use absolute fear to
gain command of any situation and control of their own
fear.
I didn’t know Alabama Law enforcement is working traffic beats in Goldsboro, NC. What’s up with that? Is this story for real?
“A janitor who was held down and beaten with a baseball bat by three attackers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin may face formal charges for shooting and killing two of his assailants with the gun that he is legally allowed to carry.”
I guess on a second read of the story he could be driving through Alabama on his way to NC. My bad.
Of course not. The only reason I suggest both parties be tested is to shut the cops up. I'm willing to bet a good number of these out of control cops are abusing steroids. Either that or the departments are going out of their way to hire people with severe mental disorders.
There are studies suggesting that people that want to be cops usually have control and power issues. A high percentage of cops are also wife beaters.
You can equate their trigger-happiness with the steroids coursing through the veins of these LEO thugs.
I see your point, mine is this, why take the steroids in the first place? Possibly because they know they are in the wrong profession and need an ‘edge’ to keep going on and on.
I’ve known several officers over time and in various locations around the country. The good ones have told me that ‘common sense’ is no longer common in the ranks. They have also told me that the bullies are becoming more and more prevalent and that they too are worried. Some of them are VERY worried.
Try equating it with Barney Fife dick-heads on power trips who know their "brother" dick-heads will always lie and cover their asses.
No surprise there.
May the cop is Larry or Mo - nah I don’t think so as both of them are smarter.
Good thing he stopped, or he’d have missed. ;-/
