A spokesman for the family of comedian David Brenner says the "Tonight Show" favorite has died. He was 78.
Brenner died Saturday afternoon at his home in New York City, said Jeff Abraham, who was Brenner's publicist.
The gangly, toothy Brenner made more than 150 appearances as a guest and substitute host on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show," starting in the 1970s.

I didn’t know, makes me like him even more.
He’s was not a mean comedian which is one of the reasons I liked him. Haven’t seen him in a long time though.
Booga-Booga!, where ever you are.
I just saw this and came right here to say RIP David Brenner.
I still remember the first time I saw him on TV. He did a great routine about how to commit the perfect murder. Just do it in NYC and throw the body into the morning rush hour crowds. The corpse eventually ends up on a school trip to the Bronx Zoo!
A very funny man ... although I don’t think I’ve seen him since the last time he was on the Carson show. I stopped watching that when Johnny retired.
He was probably the first comedian I remember seeing as a kid. I remember he was always on the Mike Douglas Show which was in Philly and Brenner was a Philly guy. Didn’t hear much from him lately but he seemed like a funny guy back then.
Sweet funny guy, out of that Jewish story teller tradition.
I know. Seems he was just entertaining us yesterday, doesn’t it?
Well don’t look at me!
My first leisure suit was based on something he used to wear - RIP David.....
No kidding. I guess that’s what it’s like when we get older- which I hate. David Brenner was one my favorite guest hosts on Johnny Carson. Just damn.
Reading all these comments makes me think there are a lot of baby booomer freepers. Am I right?
I thought he was 10 years younger than that. RIP.
I didn’t think he was that old either. You know, I don’t like seeing the good folks from the back end of the 20th Century check out.
Frankly, there were many folks from the front end of the 20th Century I didn’t like seeing check out either.
Entertainment has become so crass.
If you can think of a way to talk about a private part that would turn the stomach of our parents, you’re a shoe-in these days.
That’s why I don’t follow comedians any longer.
Why do these folks think it takes a ball bat to knock people over, when it can be done so much better with a feather?
Yes, and this year it will have been 22 years since Carson left the Tonight show. Those were the days...
Likable guy, 78 hard to believe
I remember he was a favorite on the Mike Douglas Show also.
I didn’t think he was that old, then I looked at my drivers license and said OMG.
