Former Iranian intelligence officer says Tehran ordered downing of plane over Lockerbie in retaliation for US attack on Iranian airliner.
Who was responsible for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland? While the Libyan government was thought to have masterminded the terrorist attack, a bombshell documentary by Al Jazeera quotes a former Iranian intelligence officer as saying that it was Iran that ordered the atrocity.
The former agent, Abolghassem Mesbahi, who defected to Germany from Iran, is quoted by the Telegraph as saying that flight 103 was downed in retaliation for a US Navy strike on an Iranian civilian airliner six months earlier which killed 290 passengers and crew.
According to Mesbahi, the Ayatollah Khomeini instructed Iranian operatives to copy exactly what happened to the Iranian Airbus.
It was previously thought that Libya was responsible for the bombing. A former Libyan intelligence officer, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, was convicted by a Scottish court for the bombing and sentenced to life in prison.

DUH I saw original report on Al Jazeera America over the weekend it was good
Iran declared war on the United States in 1979 and has not looked back. Meanwhile, they are the root of evil in the middle east and much of the world and while we fight their neighbors, they continue to stir up trouble everywhere they go. We should have let Iraq and Afghanistan die on the vine by waxing Iran in 2003.
I missed that.
File Under: Things We Already Knew
We accidentally shoot down an airliner, which ignored warnings during an active engagement. Iran intentionally blows up civilians. How mature and typically Arab. Intentions don’t matter, just blood and hate.
Amen! I am convinced that the real reason we invaded Iraq after Afghanistan was to “bookend” Iran for a planned regime change there soon after. The traitorous Democrats and their media hounds made sure that any further Middle Eastern adventures by a republican president would be politically impossible, no matter how long overdue the clean out of the vipers nest is!
Except of course that Iranians aren’t Arabs. And damn proud of it they are.
Are their ancestors of the historic Persians, IIRC?

The Iranian’s most likely never heard the warning given on military frequencies. According to Iran the Airbus was “squawking” on IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) as a civilian aircraft. The crew of the “USS Vincennes” interpreted the electronic signal as military.
In defense of the “Vincennes”, they were actively engaged by Iranian gunboats just prior to the appearance of the Airbus on their Aegis Radars. They were probably expecting the Iranian air force to support those gunboats when the Airbus appeared on their Radars.
They going show it again tonight at 9pm est and repeat at 9pm pst on Al Jazeera America they really got into it
AL Jazeera America documentaries remind me of PBS frontline just a bit
Their actual ancestry, like everybody else’s, is of course very mixed. Too many Greeks, Turks, Mongols, etc. rampaging through.
But they certainly think of themselves as the descendants of the Persians.
If true, wouldn’t Mohammar Khadafy have copped to it before receiving the whole Ceaucescu treatment?
Thought as much....
“Meanwhile, they are the root of evil in the middle east...”
Iran was involved, but if you want the root, look towards the Soviet Union.
bump
For awhile there, some were saying that being in Iraq and Afghanistan was strategic brilliance because we would have easy access to our real enemy, Iran. That didn’t work out to be true.
