In a flashback story told as the men rest on a rainy night, Sgt. Saunders recalls the experiences of himself and several other men on the day of the D-Day invasion, including tales about Braddock, who won the platoon pool for when the invasion would take place; Doc Walton, who was reluctant to go into battle; Caje (called "Caddie" in this episode), who is accompanied by another Cajun; and Lt. Hanley, who at the time was still a sergeant, and had little battle experience compared to Saunders. Following the landing, the men move inland and come upon a farmstead.......

I loved this show as a kid. It led me to read every account of WWII I could get my hands on, which led me to reading and studying military history books in general.
A different effect on me as a 7 year-old:
Put on cammo;
Crawl through woods with my fake rifle;
Dig foxholes;
Climb trees:
Shoot imaginary Germans.
Never missed the show.
Damn that brought back memories, watching Combat and The Rat Patrol then going out and playing army. Today if kids went out and played army they would risk getting shot by some chickenspit psycho cop.
Spent many a Saturday "digging in" with my squad of buddies and taking on the designated neighborhood Germans.
Did you wade through the ponds with yer rifle over yer head, brother?? :^)
The biggest drag was getting the command to return to base: street lights coming on....
I also loved this show as a kid.
Eventually, I enlisted in the Marine Corps.
:-)
Semper Fi!
I loved that show as a kid. Never missed it.
Have a great memory of Vic Morrow in the
mess hall in Quang Tri.One of the guys asked
him if he’d like to go on patrol with us joking.
Seemed like a great guy.
Had to be to have been over there entertaining troops.
Hated it when he got killed by that sob Landis.
Yeah, those General Mom troop recalls always came at an inopportune time- just as we were beginning to roll back the huns....

I didn’t know that show was still on. I used to watch it and “Citizen Soldier” probably back in the 50s or 60s. Also had my favorite comic book, other than Superboy, it was “Sgt Rock”.
I noticed the “Military Channel” is changing it’s name to the American Hero Channel”. they are advertising a show on Monday night about the combat engineers who stopped Pieper’s near breakthrough to Antwerp.
We played a lot of army, especially when I lived in Yokosuka and Subic in the Sixties.
We usually had between five to ten kids playing. Some had to be Japanese. Some had to be German.
Everybody had to die.
A lot.
It’s what kids used to do. Later in life I wondered what some of those Marines on the base were thinking as they watched us, many of them having served in Vietnam.
Heh, times were so different. That’s the way it was. I do feel bad for kids nowadays. I don’t think they have the freedom many of us had. I remember being six or seven, and thinking nothing of walking miles from my house, picking up bottles to cash in for candy at a economically depressed part of the area.
Now they would have your parents in front of DYS for neglect. Amazing.
Hahaha...my mom had a bell on the back porch.
When she rang, you had to go. No questions asked, because it was dinner.
Later, when we went back out, it was 9:00. Funny, my parents didn’t brook being late for dinner, but later in the evening if you came in ten or fifteen minutes late, it was no big deal.
Dinner was different.
Loved it as a kid and recorded every episode during its run on Encore 10 years or so ago. Talks were underway for a movie back the late 90s, but never materialized. Just as well - there have been enough real accounts covered since then, such as Band of Brothers, to make a fictionalized movie kind of pointless....
Hanley, Saunders, Kirby, Caje, and Littlejohn shot Krauts, not Germans.
....Don't remember Citizen Soldier What was it about ? ....
The one show I'd like to see again was 'The Gallant Men', I think that was the title . It came out about the time of 'Combat!'....
Citizen Soldier was about the same as “Combat” except I think they had a different cast every week.
Or worse. Some cop shooting you for carrying a toy weapon and aiming it at other kids.
