Devin Hester is the greatest return man in the history of the NFL. Can he be the first return man ever elected into the NFL Hall Of Fame?
Here's a YouTube video of all 19 Touchdowns he scored in his eight years with the Chicago Bears.

The greatest punt return I ever saw was by Richard Trapp. He played for Florida probably in the early 60s.
He announced he WILL NOT return to the Shitcago Bears this season. Likely he’s headed to Tampa with Lovie Smith, who Hester has a very good relationship with. He said he wanted to play where ever Smith coaches after Smith was fired by the Bears.
When it comes to Hall Of Famer’s He couldn’t carry Walter Payton’s or Gayle Sayer’s Jock Strap.
No, he is not a Hall-of-Famer. He’s a good returner. But he is not Hall of Fame material. Just my two cents.
20 returns is 20 returns. He is a HOFer for sure.
He is the greatest to ever play his position. BTW, whoever made the video needs to know that the failed field goal attempt that Hester returned for a TD does count as one of his record returns. The one that doesn’t count for one of his record returns is his opening kickoff in the Super Bowl. Playoff plays don’t count as regular season records.
People always say defense wins championships (Seahawks), the same could be said about special teams. Special teams allows the offense to open the playbook more, and require fewer first downs. It allows the defense a higher chance for a (pick 6). A good run back can change the tone of the game. The ability to recover onside kicks is invaluable.
Is that the one where the punt returner crossed the field maybe four times on his way to the goal line?
I recall seeing something like that on TV about then...and had a vague recollection that it was a Florida player.
Was it against Georgia...???
I’d guess not, but I do love him as a player, like the Bears, etc. No grudge, but the biggest backlog for the HOF is at receiver and I think that is the position they would consider him in. I couldn’t vote for Hester over Marvin Harrison. Marvin caught a pass in every game he ever played in.
I doubt Tony Dungy would kick it to him in a Super Bowl to this day!
I am pretty sure it was against Georgia.
Actually all I can remember was he just kept dodging tacklers all over the field. I can’t even remember if he scored but it was an incredible punt return.
IF Hester comes out and announces that he takes it up the poop chute next week, he’ll have his very own wing in the NFL Hall Of Fame by August, this year.
Yes, Payton and Sayers were without a doubt two of the greatest to ever play running back and Sayers was a great return man in his own right. But as a return man.....and Hester is without a doubt the greatest return man to ever play the game. And with the new rule where kickoff are now from the 35 yard line instead of the 30 we may never see his likes again.
Does Hester belong in the HOF?
Oh, yeah.
It’ll be interesting to see where he ends up. Oakland? Minnesoda? Redskins?
I just looked it up on the internet and darn, it wasn’t even a punt return but a short pass and he did score. It sparked Florida to a win over Georgia.
I watched five on that video, and that was enough for me.
As a returner, yes. A Hall of Famer. I looked at his records, and he is no slouch because he has nearly every kick return/punt return record for the Bears, not a shabby feat when you consider Gayle Sayers probably held them all before him. (granted, Hester has played far longer and healthier, but...he does hold the record for kickoff and punt return average for the Bears, but...the Sixties and Seventies was a different kind of football)
I am a Pat’s fan, and I can tell you we sure hate seeing him back there, he is that good. Most returners are containable and you get the feeling most of the time that if your team does its job, they will not except in unusual circumstances let the guy get by, but this guy has it in spades.
His instinct for seeing the pathway and going single-mindedly for it once he sees it is phenomenal. And he had great balance. Runs with great strength.
I have been watching football avidly since Nov. 14, 1971 right after my family moved back to the states. I had never watched a football game even though we played a lot of neighborhood tackle and recess flag.
I was in Washington DC, and was watching a Sunday afternoon/night game on a little black and white television, and saw Dick Butkus score a touchdown on a bungled extra point attempt by the Bears. Oddly enough, I became a Redskins fan for many years..:)
Point was, I have watched a lot of kick returns, and while there are a number of players who have intermittently made some pretty electric returns, this guy seems to do it consistently. I think he is a real weapon for a team.
Here’s the failed field goal attempt against the New York Giants. This one is not included in the copulation in the first video.
