Advice new dog causes allergy reaction to toddler

Toddler gets allergic reaction to new Chocolate Lab puppy. The child loves the dog and the dog is a great dog.

Some excellent advice here already. I will just add to watch out for the child starting to cough. In children, an allergic response to something (dog, pollen, whatever) can sometimes trigger asthma, and low-level asthma in children often manifests as a cough rather than wheezing. However, the cough can become worse and turn into a full-scale asthma attack. So just keep an ear out for a persistent cough.

One suggestion I haven’t seen here: What about a cat instead of a dog? My allergist told me that I’m unusual in this regard, but I’m allergic to dogs but not cats. If that’s the case here, perhaps the toddler could have a nice kitty friend. (Best to get the kitty from a rescue operation that would be amenable to your bringing it back again.) Best of luck!

Gosh, I’m sorry to read about the Lab puppy. Hate to bring up this ‘name’, but the Obama’s chose the Portuguese Water Dog because of a daughter’s allergy. It and the Poodle are considered best for allergies. Good luck to you!!

Avoidance is what my doc said was the solution for allergies. Don’t drug the kid up, that’s no solution. Can the kid be tested to confirm an allergy? Sounds like cute doggie must find new home.

Sorry to say..there is no way to remedy this w’out giving the puppy away to a new home. Pet dander gets everywhere..unless you want to put your child on medications...for life. We just went through this in our family. It is heartbreaking. Hugs to you all.

Yes been around dogs and cats for short periods of time. Reaction the same with them also.

That should more than confirm the child has an allergy, likely to pet dander. As a dog lover myself I hate to say it but looks like the dog needs a new home. Depending on the age of the child, I wouldn't want to introduce allergy meds to their diet if at all possible (meaning find the dog a new home.)

Hopefully they'll give the pup as good a home as you would've. Too bad you're not local to me, I'd have taken him in a heartbeat. Love labs, great dogs. We're looking for a companion for our current pooch as he's starting to get up in years and a new pup/companion would keep him active.
