Those self checkout machines are TERRIBLE. I’ve used them many times, and they’re only useful to save time if you’re only buying 1-3 simple items. Even then, I always feel fortunate if the transaction isn’t interrupted by the machine requiring assistance from one of the employees that babysit them to come and clear it.
I wouldn’t dare try to use one if I had a cart full of items.

I never use self checkout in any store. My wife asked why. I told her, “I don’t work here.”

No cursing - the machine has a cursor that will do that for you!

Normally there are about 5 clerks standing around watching you try to get the self-check out to work. Except at Walmart, there’s only 1 or 2 security people watching you there.

I can’t imagine how Walmart could save with those things. Stealing would be so easy with those self-checkout counters.

I personally was in a position to see the source code to the Walmart self checkout machines in 2006-7. Back then, the header was dated "1992", and written by NCR. It was the most convoluted, torturous piece of code I ever had the misfortune to see. I suggested a re-write, which was opposed. I suggested, at the very minimal, a test environment, which was not accepted. At the very least, the code is "updated" then it is installed in 100 sites - if no major complaints, it is installed throughout all Walmart. Walmart is bizarre about money - they absolutely refuse to invest in software tools to improve the lives of their developers - preferring instead to give the task to contractors who are not allowed to talk to Walmart management. So you end up with a very disjointed product that does not reflect the needs of the consumer that is continually broken, is not tested and cannot be repaired.
I am uncertain if the situation has changed since 2006-7.

I hate self checkout counters anywhere! They always screw up when I’m trying to go through.
I’ve seen people with lots of goods using them, then half way through they will start throwing their goods back in the cart and go looking for a checkout with a person at it.
They finally pulled them out of our local store, then brought them back again. I never use them.

Isn’t a lost tooth a prerequisite to be in the store?

So how did cursing at the machine cause him to lose his tooth???
To: Ruy Dias de Bivar
I’ve abandoned more than one cart of stuff in stores that only had self-checkouts available.

I had no choice but to use a self checkout machine once in a Walmart store because there literally was not one checkout line open. When I was finished a security guard who could barely speak English walked up to me at the door and said (as best as he could) that he needed to look through my bags and see my receipt. I said no way. I used that machine because there wasn’t anyone working, I am honest, and they have sensors at the door to catch people who are not. He insisted that I allow him to go through my bags again and wanted to see my receipt. That’s when I said, “I’ll show you my papers if you show me yours.” His response? “Go ahead sir.”

Toothless man eats raw beef off of Walmart shelf
The Carlisle Sentinel reports that Scott T. Shover of Carlisle is facing felony charges after police said he was spotted eating raw meat straight off the shelf of a Walmart Monday. Actually, after noticing the alarming lacking of chicklets in the 53-year-old man's mugshot, I'd say he was more gumming raw meat than eating it. And it wasn't even the good stuff: $24.53 worth of raw ground beef and raw stew beef. Guess that stuff is easier to gum than prime rib. Shover was arrested at Taser point without incident
