"I know I would stick to whats familiar to me which is why I would head for one of the islands in the great lakes. It only has a population of around 700 now and the cold winter would probably freeze the dead solid for easy clearing. The 6 mile by 13 mile island would be pretty comfortable for a couple hundred people for quite a while." A few of my local friends have brainstormed about our town and how we could set it up to survive the zombiepocalypse even to the point of using and old fashioned handcar (if needed) to move water on the railroad tracks. (It's only about a thousand yards to fresh water from the center of town and the tracks go right to the edge of the water.)

“I personally would find an island somewhere. I cant really figure out why they stick around the area aside from it being familiar.”
Probably because it’s cheap to film the show in Georgia and because Georgia doesn’t have unions to interfere with the filming.

More likely its due to tax breaks and tax credits. Michigan is a major destination of filmmakers these days.

Cheap and tax breaks are good reasons to film at a certain location. But...
If they were going to use "brain dead" zombies, California would have been a much preferred location. They're everywhere out there, and they'd only need to get costumes.

They are approx. 1.5 years into the zombie apocalypse.

They don’t need costumes in Calif.
Have you ever driven around Oakland or Berkeley?
Holy crap!!!

A couple of hours away is actually quite far...to the north it would put them near Blue Ridge (and the terrain is all wrong)
Filming takes place closer to Conyers I believe. Though one could suggest that Woodbury was more like Buckhead or Woodstock.
A couple of hours south puts you closer to the Gulf. To the west you are in Alabama. To the east you are closing in on Savannah.
Since Atlanta’s original name was Terminus just figure it is close to Atlanta.... certainly within walking distance. Maybe Kennesaw or Smyrna or out that way

Except during ice storms and the odd snow fall.... it is pretty much summer all the time in Georgia. you have to be up in the Appalachias (or close to them) to get much of anything wintery. This year being an exception

Zombie movies or TV shows would be boring if characters just did the obviously bright thing.
I watched Lost for the first season and a half. Then it got too ridiculous. I used to laugh that they spend TV weeks on the island before they got the idea to search it.
How did they even know they were on an island? There might have been a convenience store or a thriving city on the other side of the island, but the plane males were too busy trying to established themselves as the alpha-male to find out what was on the island.

It’s what Andrew Lincoln said in an interview on the most recent Talking Dead.

Speaking of Talking Dead, I’d like to see Chandler Riggs as a guest.

It took a little while for me to get into Falling Skies but now I like it. The story makes a bit more sense than Walking Dead.
They got chased out of their stronghold (Charleston SC) at the end of the last season as well.
