LEXINGTON, Miss. - Workers at a Mississippi funeral home say they found a man alive and kicking when they opened a body bag.
Holmes County Coroner Dexter Howard calls it a miracle that 78-year-old Walter Williams is alive.
The coroner was called to Williams' home in Lexington, a community north of Jackson, where family members believed he had died.
Howard says Williams had no pulse and was pronounced dead Wednesday at 9 p.m.
Early Thursday, workers at Porter and Sons Funeral Home were preparing to embalm Williams when he started to kick in the body bag.

Holmes County Coroner Dexter Howard calls it a miracle that 78-year-old Walter Williams is alive. No, it's a miracle that you have the coroner's job when you can't even tell if a man is dead or alive.

This is why the traditional “wake” was once held. My grandfather’s body was placed on the kitchen table and a multi-day party commenced.

Holy catz, can you even imagine?
I don’t know that I’d agree with the coroner that it’s a miracle. But I suppose that works better for him than saying that his own gross negligence nearly killed someone.

Waking up in a body bag.
Now *there’s* some good, old-fashioned nightmare fuel.

Old Man: (feebly) I’m not dead!
Cart-master: (suprised) What?
Man: Nothing! Here’s your ninepence....
Old Man: I’m not dead!
Cart-master: ‘Ere! ‘E says ‘e’s not dead!
Man: Yes he is.
Old Man: I’m not!
Cart-master: ‘E isn’t?
Man: Well... he will be soon— he’s very ill...
Old Man: I’m getting better!
Man: No you’re not, you’ll be stone dead in a moment.

His bell, figuratively speaking was ringing.
In olden days some were buried with a string through the coffin, through a tube to a bell above ground to alert passers by the deceased was not. It has been known to happen throughout history.
