How could my fellow Freepers leave out this MAJOR OMISSION:
Catch 22
with the large fleet of B-25's, filmed from runway and air to air
Also, the classic Beech 18 sequence in Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World(although not an "aviation" flick.
There was also an obscure film titled Deception which had some exceptionally beautifully filmed flight scenes, including the opening sequence dramatic slip over the trees to land on a lush grass strip.

I wouldn't call it a classic but I have always enjoyed High Road to China with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. After watching it a couple of years ago, even my teenaged sons admitted it was a good movie.

Problem is that it would NOT work. The pilot for the version they built (in a real airplane workshop) crashed it and died. That pilot was a very experienced one, Paul Mantz, co-owner of Tallmantz Aviation, one of Hollywood's premier aviation shops of the time, 1965. I would dispute that "it would NOT work", as it did work for much of the movie. The crash came from a too-low pass that dragged on the ground and over-stressed the specially designed movie-use airplane so that it structurally failed when Mantz tried to power up for altitude afterwards.

Correct, sir
The aircraft fuselage broke right behind the cockpit.

I bet most people don't know what you(we) are talking about.
Great movie.I have a copy of it on VHS.
Well, if anyone wants to see it, it's on
youtube, here It's SO worth the 7 minutes or so to watch.
You should get a copy on DVD or BluRay. Go for the special edition with the extra features. The interviews with the VF-84 Tomcat drivers who filmed the scenes are great, especially them recounting how the CNO chewed their a**es out in the lobby of DC's Uptown Theater after the premiere because of that one part where the F-14 stalls out and almost goes into the drink.

Figured I'd whet some appetites for checking out the youtube video, above.

I saw that in the theater and waited for it come out on VHS and then DVD. I’ll give the Blu-ray a chance to get cheaper. :)

One of the best is the “622 Squadron” one of the greatest plans the British Mosquito. It is about training to bomb the Nazi heavy water plant in Norway. Also liked “Dam Busters”. they did a test run a few years ago on one of the Ed channels.

You have good taste! My favorites as well. I like John Wayne’s character’s idea of CRM.

Damn, between 1930 and 1980, they only made one airplane film worth mentioning? Sure glad to see things improved so much from in the last 25 years, they dominate the list! < /sarc >
