As you read the following, keep in mind that this happened three weeks ago. The only reason I know about it is because Glenn Reynolds linked to it this morning.
The FBI says a Georgia Tech graduate student was burned by a Molotov cocktail at his apartment in the 200 block of 10th Street, not far from Piedmont Park.
Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said Saamer Akhshabi suffered third-degree burns over 90 percent of his body. Lighter fluid and a charred pillow and mattress were found inside the apartment, along with the Molotov cocktail and several plastic bottles filled with gasoline and kerosene.
The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, along with the Atlanta Police Department and Atlanta Fire-Rescue are working to investigate the circumstances behind the incident. Homeland Security was also notified of the explosion.
But according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle on Feb. 6: "Officials: No sign of terrorism in fire at Ga. Tech students apt." Other than, y'know, the Iranian guy making Molotov cocktails.
Why was he making them? I have no idea, because this only made the local news in Atlanta and there was no follow-up. Nobody's curious about why this guy was making firebombs in his apartment.
If only there were some way to connect him to the Tea Party. But that seems unlikely after you look at his Twitter account, @sam_pers:
Four tweets in all, three of them about how awesome Obamacare is. Nope, no way he's a teabagger. Never mind!
#GetCovered... in third-degree burns.
According to Akhshabi's personal page at the Georgia Tech site, he's "interested in Internet evolution, evolutionary network modeling, and adaptive video streaming." He forgot "making improvised incendiary devices."
Why was he doing that? How did he burn himself so badly? Just goofing around?
Must be. He's one of the good guys. Move along, wingnuts.
Seriously? Never having tried to build a bomb, I don’t know if it’s hard enough that I shouldn’t be surprised that all these people blow themselves up. But a Molotov Cocktail? How hard is “Don’t light it if you’re still covered in gasoline?”
How about “Don’t light it until you’re ready to throw it”?
We’re importing enemy combatant “students” because why, again?
Bookmarked, the guy was making pro-Obamacare tweets as well. That’s a bit amazing.
Was he having cocktails in bed?
Well, OK. Just remember, though, that if you’re soaked in gasoline, you’re not ready to throw it.
Probably soaked the whole rag in gasoline instead of just the edge of it. Went up instantly and the bottle exploded. Still wonder why he lit it in his apartment.
Also: you’d better fill the bottle. A pocket of oxygen-containing air in the bottle can be bad news, too.
NOT and Hell of an Engineer!
And as a muslim - he probably doesn’t even drink his whiskey clear either!
GA Tech has the best school song. Swearing, gambling and drinking are in it!
He could have burned down the whole building.
Off Topic but the Cinnamon Challenge?? Those guys are a hoot!

A. Bush’s fault
B. Doing the job Americans won’t do
C. Both A and B
D. None of the above
Tough choices
A note about my student Saamer Akhshabi (February 9, 2014)
I can understand why he’s thrilled with Obamacare what with his burns and all.
Take apart a book of safety matches. Turn the cover inside out and fold it over the matches, with the striking surface on the inside. Rubber-band the thing together. Squeeze the cover as you pull it off, and the match-heads will light. This way you can light up any kind of fire-bomb one-handed. Like pulling the pin on a grenade just before you throw it.
