CLOVER, S.C. — York County deputies say an officer shot a 70-year-old man reaching for a cane during a traffic stop because he thought the man was grabbing a rifle from the bed of his pickup truck.

Sheriff's office spokesman Trent Faris said Knox stopped 70-year-old Bobby Canipe (kah-NYP') of Lincolnton, N.C., for an expired license plate Tuesday evening. Investigators say Canipe got out of his pickup and reached into the truck bed for his cane and Knox fired several shots, hitting Canipe once.

Faris says the shooting was unfortunate, but appeared to be appropriate because Knox felt an imminent threat to his life.

I take it that no newspaper delivery chicks were available to shoot? Anyone care to guess if this department uses video shoot or don’t shoot training? Seems like that program leads to a number of overly quick shooting reactions. I could see drawing the weapon, but without actually being targeted, I see no justification for firing. You or I do this, we go to jail.
I never thought of that. But, if that is the reason, why didn’t my generation grow up like that? After all, there were many shoot em up shows in the 50’s and 60’s. There were the wild west shows, too. We were taught morals back then. I am just thinking out loud. We did not have all the drugs back then either. I think some are on a power kick, too.

Well, I guess the old guy should feel fortunate he didn't die at the scene...gezzz

No problem, I'll just say that I felt an imminent threat to my life.
Remind me to put a sign on my car that says “Two canes, one almost totally disabled woman, and one man with Defibrilator/pacemaker in car. Do Not Shoot”.
And that dog is a K9 (retired) and my son is a police officer so don’t shoot them either.
He doesn't really have to think it's a rifle; he merely needs to feel threatened.
When you're trained to think of the public as the enemy, any action is a threat.

YORK COUNTY, SC – After an initial review of the car video from the incident, we can report that on February 25, 2014, at approximately 7:30 p.m., York County Sheriff’s Deputy Terrance Knox made a traffic stop on a vehicle with an expired license plate at Highway 321 and Motseller Street north of the town of Clover.
The driver of the vehicle, Bobby Dean Canipe, 70, of Lincolnton, North Carolina, exited his vehicle and reached in his truck bed, raised what Deputy Knox perceived to be a long barrel weapon. Deputy Knox was forced to make a split second, life or death decision and fired his weapon several times striking Canipe once. Canipe had grabbed a walking cane from the bed of his truck. Deputy Knox rendered aid to Mr. Canipe until EMS arrived.
At Sheriff’s Bryant’s request, The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating the incident and will report their findings to the 16th Circuit Solicitor.
The situation is very unfortunate. It does appear, at this time, that Deputy Knox’s actions were an appropriate response to what he reasonably believed to be an imminent threat to his life; however, a full internal investigation will be conducted.
Deputy Knox has been placed on paid administrative leave pending a full investigation. We have had contact with Mr. Canipe’s family and understand that he is expected to recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Canipe and his family as well as Deputy Knox and his family.
So when I reach in my pocket for my license and in the glove box for the registration if the LEO feels threatened I get shot?
The next time I get pulled over the license and registration will be in my hand and my hands will be out the window.
