[T]he moments before police officer fatally shot newlywed firefighter in downtown KC
The Kansas City Star ^ | February 25, 2014 | Donna McGuire

Posted on 02/26/2014 8:38:36 PM PST by Uncle Chip

As he lay bleeding on a downtown Kansas City street, newlywed Anthony Bruno mouthed “Don’t let me die” to a bystander who had rolled him on his back to check two gunshot wounds.

On the pavement nearby, Police Officer Donald Hubbard felt himself drifting in and out of consciousness. Blood dripped from his broken and battered face. He tried to get up but fell back.

The bystander, who happened to be a critical care nurse in a hospital trauma unit, could not find Bruno’s pulse. She asked Hubbard to apply pressure to Bruno’s wounds while she began chest compressions. Hubbard crawled to her as sirens sounded in the distance, according to documents released Tuesday by police.

Soon an arriving police officer asked what direction the gunman had fled.

Hubbard looked up.

“I shot him,” he said.

Multiple witnesses described elements of that scene to investigators trying to piece together what led to an off-duty Kansas City police officer fatally shooting an off-duty Kansas City firefighter who had been celebrating his November wedding in the early hours of Dec. 1....

Why police officers now find it optimal to end up killing something is amazing.

I agree with you. This is an overweight drunk guy. The cop could have gotten away from him and waited for back up. We don't know what started this, but I can't imagine what would warrant an immediate execution. The worst of death row gets 25 years of appeals.

Some people like to throw fists at cops when they get drunk. Odds are the cop tried to handle the situation tactfully, but the drunk decided to get physical.

Having read the story and watched the video, I have to say the shootings looks completely justified. As another poster mentioned, it looks an awful lot like what was described in the Zimmerman case. That guy was wailing on the cop when he got shot.

And, is it me, or are the people taking the video kind of d-bags? You see a couple struggling with a subject, the cop asks you to call for help, and you stand there and critique the cop’s techniques. I’m not saying they should have physically intervened, but you can film and call 911 at the same time, you dooshes. Also, saying “don’t fight the cop” is usually not very effective in stopping people willing to beat up a cop.

At any rate, I’m sorry the guy died, but you can’t start Trayvonning an armed man, much less a cop, and not expect consequences.

So the firefighter beat up a cab driver, almost gets into a fight with some guys who came over the help the driver, starts a fight with an off-duty cop and almost beats him to death.

But the firefighter’s wife says he wasn’t drunk, so he can’t even blame the booze. Wonder how many other fights he’d been in.

I don’t think a cop should ever be killed. or a citizen.

"...but I can't imagine what would warrant an immediate execution."

Its the risk you run when you pin someone and beat their face. Trayvon tried it, this guy tried. Doesn't end well when the guy you are beating has a gun.

With all due respect, you only had a problem with the cop shooting the guy. You didn’t say a word about the drunk trying to beat the cop to death.

A stupid argument over cab fare ends up tragically. The firefighter is a big guy and not being very cooperative. The cop seems out of shape... At one point, it did look like maybe the cop was trying to drop a knee on the guys head or neck.

I very much didn’t want this cop to be injured. Which is why he shouldn’t be out on the street until he knows what he’s doing.

The Cop was working as Security at the hotel. What are the laws regarding arrest by a Security Officer in that State? Once he puts on a Security Uniform does he lose his powers cited to off duty cops?

Different places in the world have differing arrest laws and citizen’s power of arrest. Just curious as here in Australia even though we have the right to make a citizen’s arrest it can be a minefield if not done correctly and in this case once the felony had ceased it is better to let the perp walk if they insist and give the cops the information on the guy - most don’t know this and will usually follow instruction.

You live in the same fantasy world as the idiots that filmed the video. I’d guess you would’ve just stood there also just like them and blame the cop because the other guy wouldn’t cooperate. Cops aren’t all supermen with magical powers. You watch too much tv.

The fireman attacked the cab driver. Go back and read the story.

Guess what, the cop was seriously injured in the assault.

The Kansas City Star reports that Hubbard suffered serious injuries from the attack and was taken to a hospital, where he required facial reconstructive surgery. He had a broken eye socket, a fractured cheekbone, severe facial cuts, and a loss of feeling.

He was at a real risk of being beaten to death.

Don’t know what led up to that but, looks justified.to me.

If you have good cause to fight a uniform you better win and subdue him.

You hit any man in the face and it’s gonna end badly.

Sorry about the new bride’s loss.

I don’t watch TV. I think you live in a fantasy world. Show me one place that says this is the proper protocol to deal with this situation. No police officer would say it is.

In most places in the states, a cop is always a cop whether he was on duty or not.

Why would an armed police officer end up rolling around on the ground with a suspect? Doesn't that violate the protocol of how this is supposed to be handled?
///////////////////////////////////////////
Why don't you tell us the exact protocol? You must know since it was so obvious to you that it was violated by the cop you felt it merited a joke.
