SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLORIDA - All Gilberto Powell, 22, a five foot tall man with Down Syndrome, wanted to do was walk a half block home from a friend's house, but this was enough time and distance for the police to intervene.
Police "followed" Powell because they noticed a "bulge in his pants." He was not happy to see the cops; this was only his colostomy bag (which police ripped from his body). Powell was then beaten down in the street by police, leaving him bruised and battered from blows to the face.
The beating officer insisted Powell ran, but Powell disputes this and said he did everything he could to comply. When Powell's mother asked the cop if he could tell her son had Down's Syndrome, the cop said he wasn't a doctor.
Powell said he felt "helpless" and wants an apology from the police. He also wants to community to be aware that this could happen to YOU
Um, we would be speaking out because people don’t have the right to bear arms? Is that what you’re saying?
Why would a Down Syndrome kid be carrying a gun?
Yeah, right. This kind of thing never happened before Obama. All we have to do now is wait for Obama to leave office and it will stop happening.
Geez.
And the cops knew this? Even if they knew, you are telling me that a person with downs couldn’t be armed?
What if your glasses “might” actually carry a tiny explosive weapon? What if your watch “might” have a poisonous drug in it that you “could” use to kill someone? What if your cell phone “might” have a detonator for a bomb in it? If the police DEMAND that YOU have to stop walking on a public sidewalk based on their whims, will YOU submit? If not, then you are a hypocrite.
Why not?
When Powell's mother asked the cop if he could tell her son had Down's Syndrome, the cop said he wasn't a doctor.
Hey doc they couldn't even tell this guy had Down's Syndrome.
So I'm confident these officers will now be up for promotion to detective!
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
What part of the above is so difficult to understand?
Thanks for the Retort of the ages! Rock on!
To keep crazy people from ripping off their colostomy bag?
Seems highly unlikely that the officers in question would be this badly trained as to fail to recognize someone with Down Syndrome, much less someone with a colostomy bag versus a gun.
True; you gotta watch out for your colostomy bag in Obama’s America.
Just what got this cope so interested? If Powell was doing nothing at all with thei threatening bag, why did this brave cop decide to roust him?
But, the cop went home safe that night, that is all that really matters, right?
just to relieve the monotony, let me argue the other side.
right now in this country, we have an epidemic of people running from the cops. its usually young Africa American males, who must have a gene that makes them right on site.
i’m not a cop and I don’t know any, but I can imagine the frustration that nowadays people don’t even have the common sense or even duty as a citizen to obey a cop.
now, of course, there will be tragedies. like the combination of a bad cop and maybe this down syndrome person.
but honestly, to me its a liberals whine to take one small example and say, we need to let people break the law.
ala Trayvon.
Apparently, "doc" seems to be under the impression that we have an "it's totally OK to search any bulge bigger than yours" exception to the Fourth Amendment.
Are you a police officer? Do you have a background in law enforcement? I do. Until you put yourself in the shoes of the police ... judge not.
The cop involved has quite a history.
Then he was NOT arrested and let go....
Ohhhhhhhh.....gezzzz
