[history]
A Northern California couple out walking their dog on their property stumbled across a modern-day bonanza: $10 million in rare, mint-condition gold coins buried in the shadow of an old tree.
Nearly all of the 1,427 coins, dating from 1847 to 1894, are in uncirculated, mint condition, said David Hall, co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, which recently authenticated them. Although the face value of the gold pieces only adds up to about $27,000, some of them are so rare that coin experts say they could fetch nearly $1 million apiece.

I would quietly sell it off, bit by bit. The description of the coins, so rare that some would fetch $1 mil each? No way they could keep it quiet. My guess is that they've already explored that option.

I wonder if they will be able to determine how it came to be there?

Dummies, CA gets about 15% and the feds about 39%. I would have kept my mouth shut and moved to Florida, Texas or Tenn. and then Claimed I found the coins on my new property

The government will claim they are from a robbery and rob this couple of their gold.Uh oh. I can just see the feds coming on over and confiscating the lot because they are government proprty.
so cometh the federal government to claim THEIR gold.
The US Government will claim that these gold coins should have been redeemed at the US Federal Reserve because Executive Order 6102 required all persons to deliver on or before May 1, 1933 as so they must be redeemed to the government at face value.

I’m not buying it. I believe they have a time machine and went back and placed the hoard there themselves.

That's my point. Remember the guy, I think he was in Nevada, a year or so ago who discovered a stash of un-circulated silver dollars minted in the 1800âs that belonged to one of his deceased family member? If I recall correctly, it was worth $400,000 to $500,000 and the government took it all and paid the man ZERO!
To: drypowder
Wow. Is that true? Do you have a link for that story?
