Austin, Texas Police Chief Art Acevedo was asked to defend the actions of his officers, who subdued and arrested a jogging woman because she was wearing earbuds and couldnt hear their instructions. His response to the controversy was this: It could be worseat least she wasnt sexually assaulted.
That response upset many Texas residents, and Acevedo was forced to walk back his comments on Monday.
Austin police arrested the jogging woman last week. They were stationed at an intersection near the University of Texass Austin campus, giving jaywalking tickets to dozens of people. The woman ran right past them, unable to hear because of her earbuds. Cops pursued and restrained the confused woman, eventually placing her in a squad car and charging her failure to carry identification and violating a traffic signal.
The incident was recorded by an innocent bystander, who turned the footage over to local news. That bystander, Chris Quintero, said the police behaved badly. Many Texans agreed.
But when asked to comment on the situation, Acevedo said that his officers hadnt behaved nearly as badly as officers around the country who are routinely caught committing sexual assault.
Cops are actually committing sexual assaults on duty so I thank God that this is what passes for a controversy in Austin, Texas, he said according to CNN.
He also praised the mediocrity of the Austin police department.
And Im glad that Im here having to address mediocrity, he said.
It was a comparison that Acevedo soon regretted, and on Monday, he apologized and said his choice of words had been poor.
During the press conference I attempted to place the arrest into context by bringing attention to the fact that law enforcement deals with many acts of serious misconduct, he said. This includes recent instances in the news of sexual assault by police officers in other cities. In hindsight I believe the comparison was a poor analogy, and for this I apologize.
While the comparison may not have been an apt or flattering one for Austin police, it is nevertheless true.
But you can't and won't add them together because they are apples and oranges and you know it, right???
8 apples and 14 oranges -- 8 countries and 14 states -- different entities that cannot just be thrown into the same pot or the same equation.
That's why you refused to add them together.
Thanks for playing --
That is correct. A foreign state and a U.S. state are not the same thing. I’m glad you learned something today.
For what state is Hillary Clinton working in the State Department, Unclr Chip?
If you want to go all philosophical on me go ahead but this case does not fit into that category.
Having done what she did -- running away claiming she didn't hear, pulling her arm away when the police grabbed it to get her attention, refusing to give her name, claiming she didn't do anything wrong, dropping on her @** to keep from being handcuffed, screaming and yelling and cursing like a banshee .....
If they hadn't taken her into the station I would have been upset along with the 28 other people who were stopped and yet behaved in a totally civil manner in contrast to her.
Find another heroine for your cause because she ain't one. Just hope and pray that she does not ever enter the police academy.
None —
You’re winning the “Thread Clown” title hands down, Uncle Chip...
Coming from you that’s a compliment —
I'd fire the SOB right away...if I was his boss.
Really?
Are you alleging she did hear?
How do you know this?
Tens of thousands of criminal illegal aliens run the streets with NO identification in Austin Texas..Millions in the state...And you sit here defending the local governments overweight cops setting up a jaywalking operations for college kids?
Just the way it is?
Is it that canned government response again Mr. Chip?
We're way past "to protect and serve." Looking back, one of the sure signs of that was when we quit calling them "peace" or "police" officer, and began calling the LEO's - law enforcement officers - all in capitol letters. Words have meaning.
Is the cop-bashing Uncle Chip posting, or is the peasant wench-bashing Uncle Chip posting?
Multiple online personalities can be SO confusing...
So I take it that you believe her when she says that because she had earbuds in her ear that she didn't hear????
How about when the officer grabbed her arm and she turned around and pulled her arm away from him??? Did her earbuds make her blind as well???
What more can we blame on those earbuds -- they certainly didn't affect her vocal cords.
28 people stopped -- 7 cited -- 1 arrested -- and that police abuse to you???
Did you hear the other 27 people screaming like banshees and cursing and refusing to give their names like this one???
Find another cause -- this is a lost one.
What confuses you is when somebody actually reads the article and follows the facts and the evidence found therein — as opposed to some people who come to these threads with preconceived notions and a wornout agenda.
You should try the former some time.
I don’t take advice from Internet schizophrenics - but thanks for playing.
So I take it that you believe her
You don't answer a question with a question.
Again, how do you know she heard him?
How do you know she was not startled when the overweight police officer grabbed her from behind?
Remember Mr. Chip, were not talking a a fleeing felon from a bank robbery or murder.
You speak of facts and evidence, what about the witness who obtained the video stating this was bad conduct on the officers part?
What about witness statement evidence?
Does that not fit your agenda?

...Of course, if a Mundane had the audacity to touch a cop on the arm, this act of desecration would be described as aggravated assault on an officer, and the offender would most likely be tasered and beaten bloody. In this case, from Acedevos perspective, the female Mundane committed a crime when she shrugged off a physical advance from a member of the exalted brotherhood of official coercion: Quite frankly, she wasnt charged with resisting and shes lucky I wasnt the arresting officer because I wouldnt have been as generous....
One hopes uncle chip has no daughters or granddaughters being grabbed on the streets by fat strangers.
