of her son Adam's 26 victims who hope to sue her estate

The estate of the mother of Newtown school shooter Adam Lanza is worth roughly $64,000, according to a Connecticut attorney who inventoried her finances, which is a devastating blow for victims of the massacre who are seeking damages over the shooting that left 27 people dead and a small town in shock.

Nancy Lanza, the mother of the disturbed shooter who bought him multiple firearms and taught him to shoot when he was just a small child, had five bank accounts worth a total of $60,000, according to an inventory of her finances filed in probate court earlier this month by attorney Samuel Starks.

The home Nancy Lanza shared with her son - where Adam Lanza fatally shot her as she was laying in her bed - has a fair market value of about $360,000. However, Lanza owes more than $400,000 on the mortgage of the home, so her estate is 'underwater' for about $40,000 on the Yogananda Street property.

Other than the home and bank accounts, Nancy Lanza's only other assets is a jewelery collection valued at about $5,000.

The inventory of Nancy Lanza's finances was first reported by the Hartford Courant. According to the paper, the 3,100-square-foot home - that has been vacant since the December 14, 2012, shooting - was appraised for more than $523,000.

However, real estate agents say it's unclear what the house could actually sell for once potential buyers realize it was the home of the man responsible for the second most-deadly mass-shooting in U.S. history....

I’m curious why HER estate would be held liable for HIS actions...

So be careful to whom you lend your car and be care to whom you provide firearms.

I hardly think being shot to death makes his appropriation of her firearms a "loan".

I’m guessing that they would claim that she armed him by buying him the weapons he used and failing to secure them from him as she knew that he had mental problems.

Northeasterners believe guns in schools are the evil.

In the Northeast guns in schools ARE evil because the only people with guns in school are evil.

If there were just few good guys with guns in school, then the guns in school would be good.,

IMO, lawyers are the root of most evil.

You should have put “betters” in quotes. They aren’t.

My understanding is that multiple fundraisers were held for the families of the children killed at Sandy Hook and each one of them has received a good settlement.

As far as I know not one lawsuit has been filed agains’t the school by any family which is unheard of in these kinds of cases. I wonder why not?

Perhaps not but imagine this....the lawyer representing the families of the dead kids tells the jury "and his mother taught him how to shoot,in spite of her knowledge of his serious brain disorder, and had a mini arsenal in her home which she stored in a manner which was inadequate to prevent her obviously disturbed, unstable, son from getting at it.That makes her,at best, breathtakingly negligent in this case and that negligence led to the deaths of 20+ children".

Most juries in this part of the country...but not necessarily in *all* parts of the country....would buy this argument hook, line and sinker.

And BTW...the words I quoted were a lawyer's words, not mine (just in case anyone accuses me of being anti 2nd Amendment).

I think that it’s against the law to sue a school district in many states.

They can do so to get answers or access to information or changes in policy but not financial remunerations.

Which raises a question as to who is paying the mortgage on that house right now.

I’ll bet the father was as required in the divorce but now there is no need to — let the bank have it.

Tbe families will sue the gunmakers.

And the ammunition maker(s).

A story on that general subject...a few years ago there was an ugly fire at a Rhode Island nightclub.About 100 people died in that fire.It got huge coverage here for months...I don't know how much press it got nationwide. But a month or so after the event there was a local story stating, among other things, that the club owners and the band that was believed to be responsible were broke. No insurance,no nothin'.The story went on to say that the families were considering suing Royal Dutch Shell...SHELL OIL...because they were one of the "sponsors" of the band's appearance. That's how far down the plughole this country has descended.

The public duty doctrine will prevent a successful lawsuit against the school district, town, or the police.

Hard to say. I had a neighbor once who was a lawyer, with seven kids. We lived in the 11434 zip code, now 99.8% black, then getting sketchy. He defended a guy from Forest Hills on a charge that he murdered his wife. He lost the case, but took the home in payment. There was a big blood stain on the hardwood floor. He had that repaired and moved his family in.

And his wife is a managing director at Goldman Sachs.

Two reasons that I view him with somewhat less enthusiasm than most FReepers.

$64,000 in cash in bank accounts isn’t exactly poor.

Supposedly, Nancy Lanza received $289,800 in alimony in 2012. It was supposed to continue until 2023, with COLA.

64k estate == poor. 290k income == rich. Go figure.
