Russias vaunted hockey has been eliminated from the Olympics following a loss to Finland Wednesday on home ice in Sochi. The Russians lost 3-1 in the knockout round. Finnish goaltender Tuuka Rask of the Boston Bruins turned away 37 Russian shots, surrendering only a power-play goal to former NHL star Ilya Kovalchuk.

Vlad does not look happy in the photo accompanying the photo. If I was a NHL Russian hockey player I would get out of dodge ASAP before Putin confiscates the passports.

The sad thing now about the Olympic hockey tournament is that I don’t really even care who wins, I just don’t want the various Dallas Stars players over there to get hurt. Bring back the amateurs.

I hope not. We need Alexander Semin back in Raleigh.

That's actually the most honest photo I've ever seen of him. That's exactly how I feel when my favorite teams lose. Thank God I don't have nukes at my disposal at those times though.

The USA-Russia game was exciting but comparisons to what happened in 1980 were exaggerated. A terrific win a few days ago but not on the same level despite Meredith Vierra (sp.) wanting to make T.J. Oshie Hillary Clinton's running mate.

I was watching the hockey news coverage and they interviewed a parent of some Eastern European high school hockey player and he said that their goal is to get their son to the NHL in America. He indicated that that is where all the players want to go. They don’t want to play for Russia first?

It was kind of tainted as well, as the Russians should have been awarded that goal. Maybe the US comes back anyway, but we’ll never know.

Doesn’t anyone who plays basketball want to play in the NBA?
Or any soccer player want to play in England, or elsewhere in Europe?

Correct. This time, we had pros playing pros. In 1980, a U.S. amateur team upset a team of Soviet professionals.
It was also a harbinger of great things to come that first Tuesday in November.

Russias vaunted hockey has been eliminated from the Olympics . . . Three thoughts:
1) I hope there wasn't an American referee involved.
2) If not, how long will it take them to somehow blame the Americans anyway?
3) I hope the NHL has their Russian players in a safe house - Vladi does not look happy.

Doesnt anyone who plays basketball want to play in the NBA?So true! I have a 5'8" nephew in the Philippines that plays basketball well against 5'10" giants in his peer group. He dreams of starting for an NBA team...I don't have the heart to discourage him, but I don't think he's the second coming of Muggsy Bogues.

whether we like it or not the professional players in the Olympics seem to be here to stay. All season long I follow the Red Wings so why when the Olympics come along would I support a team packed with NHL players that play AGAINST my Red Wings? I wanted Russia to win because I love Pavel Datsyuk. Now I’ll cheer on Sweden who have 5 Wings on their roster.

Word is Vlad personally picked the coach. He is surely on the hook for this.
Russia by far played their best game against the US. They really struggled against inferior teams like Slovakia and Norway. Norway particularly stunned me because they are, aside from Mats Zuccarello, a beer league team. Russia just could not score. Maybe that loss to us just took all the wind out of their sails.
Once again Alexander Ovechkin was absolutely M.I.A.

I googled the Russian coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov. He coached and played for HC Dynamo Moscow. The club was sponsored by the KGB. No wonder Vlad picked him.
