Word For The Day, Wednesday, February 19, 2014-- forte

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

forte [fawrt, fohrt or for 1, fawr-tey]

hear it pronounced

noun

1. a person's strong suit, or most highly developed characteristic, talent, or skill; something that one excels in: I don't know what her forte is, but it's not music. Synonyms: talent, skill, excellence, strength, strong point, specialty, proficiency; knack, bent.
2. the stronger part of a sword blade, between the middle and the hilt (opposed to foible ).
3. A musical direction meaning “to be performed loudly”; the opposite of piano.

Pronunciation note:
In the sense of a person's strong suit ( He draws well, but sculpture is his real forte ), the older and historical pronunciation of forte is the one-syllable [fawrt] or [fohrt] pronounced as the English word fort. The word is derived from the French word fort, meaning “strong.” A two-syllable pronunciation [fawr-tey] is increasingly heard, especially from younger educated speakers, perhaps owing to confusion with the musical term forte, pronounced in English as [fawr-tey] and in Italian as [fawr-te]. Both the one- and two-syllable pronunciations of forte are now considered standard.

Origin: 1715–25; < Italian < Latin fortis strong

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Far from being humorless, you’re exhibiting one of the best aspects of Free Republic - knowledge sharing. Pick up a lot around here if one knows where to keep an ear out. Hell, when it comes to wildlife, I saw my first-ever non-zoo owl this week; that’s how city-fied I am.

we have no food outside, i doubt anyone else does, i just think that they were here first. The culdesac upon which we live was a farm for years before they built our houses. I do not want to kill it, i just wish there was a way to keep it out of our yard. We do not live in a city, it is a wooded suburbia. there is a preserved area down at the creek that cannot be touched by developers and it’s where he and his den are, i am sure. but they love to go catting around the dang neighborhood wreaking havoc among the dog population.

DC had a white Hedwig-like snowy owl downtown. it got hit and injured by a bus, the poor thing, but it was being taken care of at a place that deals with injured wildlife.

Beautiful animals. Amazes me how large they are compared to their light weight. Guess that must help with that whole flying thing....

Haha - no, I'm sure no one is thinking anything but appreciating your opinion on this matter~! You have a different perspective because, as you say, you live in THEIR playground. I agree with that - just as I don't like swimming in the ocean because it is their toilet! lol

I agree that people leaving food out feeds wild animals and it will just keep drawing them in. But I would protect my dogs before being concerned about a wild fox. Just my opinion

There is a fox living inside Jones Stadium at Texas Tech. At one time that was the edge of town but is no longer so I don’t know where this animal is getting food - but he appeared on national TV this past fall when, during the middle of a football game, he decided to streak across the field! It was hilarious - they had to stop until he got through running and got back into the hole he had emerged from! It was the first time I learned of this fox but he is well known to the staff, they just let him live there.

Just got back from the gym, which is ten miles away. I had gone about a mile, on a quiet country road, when, all of a sudden, I started to fishtail. The fact that it was raining and exactly 32 degrees should have alerted me to the danger, but I actually thought it was warmer out. Anyway, no harm. I went perpendicular to the road, facing right, and then did a 180 and ended up facing to the left before the car started obeying my commands. Very lucky that nobody was coming towards me at the time.

Well, a phone call from me solved most of the problem-the customary rudeness of a certain electrician caused it in the first place-he has zero customer service skills.

My compadre is coming by to take me to a late lunch for thanks-I’m going to try to organize some kind of a mini-customer service wcrkshop if I can get all the other subs on one site at the same time-this s*** is not cool-no one is helped by a fellow worker’s bad attitude...

Your wooded suburb on a creek as a protected area is exactly the same as where we lived in the burb—a protected, designated greenbelt and park with hiking/biking trails, development forbidden-so if even one of the neighbors is leaving pet food out, it is a magnet-nothing you can do about that. I’m really surprised there are no fences around properties, though, that close to a natural area. You might try a motion detector of some sort, like you mentioned-an electronics shop may have some good choices.
