Canadian researchers have confirmed what most people suspected all along: that internet trolls are archetypal Machiavellian sadists.
In a survey conducted by the group of psychologists, people who partake in so-called trolling online showed signs of sadism, psychopathy, and were Machiavellian in their manipulation of others and their disregard for morality.
The researchers defined online trolling as “the practice of behaving in a deceptive, destructive, or disruptive manner in a social setting on the Internet” for no purpose other than their pleasure. …

I have an acquaintance that was a cop and he used the word “trolling” for going to known homo prostitute hangouts in plainclothes and making busts for solicitation.
I always used to bust on him in asking if he has gone trolling lately.
Actually, trolling is what most of the press does every day.
When they put up a headline that grabs your attention but either leaves relevant facts out or only provide a critical reversing fact at the end of the story, it’s doing the same thing.
I always thought troll referred to the thing living under the bridge trying to trap the 3 Billy Goats Gruff.
All part of the campaign to end anonymous posting of comments on the Internet. Its a campaign that’s working quite well from what I’ve observed.
Of course, the result is that only those who agree with the viewpoint of a particular newspaper or website, (HuffPost for example), surrender their autonomy and submit comments. The result of course is to silence any opposing views and to insure that anyone who does post opposing views is easily identified and made traceable.
Its part of the end game for the Progressives to take over the internet and silence any opposing views.
I wish I could find out how to get paid, I might give up my retirement.
I hoped the study talked about disinhibition
Normal people will really push their boundaries if they feel anonymous and they aren’t communicating with others face-to-face. Basically, people lose their inhibition.
I don’t really think most trolls are psychopaths - you do it because you can and get away with it.
You (and Kennard and saganite) have the right of it.
I cannot recall any conversation with a leftist that DIDN’T contain ignorance, lies, or projection.
Projection is dumping off their inadequacies onto another.
WHY they must do this is important to understand.
The truth is - they are full of self-loathing, and cannot stand the portrait of themselves that introspective analysis reveals.
It is an emotional compulsion, projection.
Their hollowness demands servitude to its corrosive dictates.

Can’t study the psychology of one without the other.
